The UK Championship 1989 was a snooker tournament that was played from November 17 to December 3, 1989 at the Guild Hall in Preston . Stephen Hendry won his first UK title with a 16:12 win over record winner and world number one Steve Davis . For Hendry it was the fourth title in his breakthrough season. After every other country in the UK had at least one winner, he was also the first Scot to win the UK Championship.

Prize money

For the first time since the UK Championship gained world ranking tournament status, there was only a relatively modest increase in prize money of £ 22,000 over the previous year. And apart from the reintroduced bonus of £ 2000 for the highest qualification break, the increase went exclusively to the winner for the first time.
