The 555 Asian Open 1989 was a snooker tournament as part of the Snooker Main Tour of the 1989/90 season , which was held in Bangkok from August 17 to 27 . It was the first world ranking tournament in Thailand, previously there had only been the Thailand Masters as an invitation tournament in professional snooker .
At the last Thailand Masters in 1986 , local hero James Wattana , at that time still as an amateur, won. In his first year as a professional, he reached his first final at his first home tournament. The winner was 20-year-old Stephen Hendry , who won the final 9: 6. The Scot became the leading player in the world as the season progressed.
The last 64
The top 32 of the world rankings were set for the round of the last 64. The remaining professional players had previously played two qualifying rounds and the 32 winners were drawn into the top 32. From the second main round, the games were recorded by cameras in the studios of Channel 12 . Up to and including the semi-finals, the best of 9 mode (5 winning frames) was played. For the final, a maximum of 17 frames were planned for the decision (9 winning frames).
