After the number of participants had dropped two months earlier in the last tournament, this was repeated with this tournament. As a result, the first round played in the previous four tournaments, which had already been reduced to just four games in the previous year, was finally eliminated. All players competed against each other in the round of 64 in the knockout system , with Steve James getting a bye in the first round. Up to and including the semi-finals, the game was played in the best of 9 frames mode , until this upper limit increased to a maximum of 17 frames in the final.
