Nigel Gilbert (born March 20, 1959 ) is a former English snooker player who was a professional player for a total of 14 seasons between 1986 and 2001. During this time he reached the quarter-finals of the Grand Prix 1988 and rank 44 in the world snooker rankings .

Career

Gilbert's first major success as a snooker player came in 1983 when he reached the quarter-finals of qualifying for the English Amateur Championship . After he was eliminated in the same tournament in the round of 16 in 1984, he was eliminated in 1985 in both the first and second event of the WPBSA Pro Ticket Series 86/87 in the round of 16. After he had reached the quarter-finals of the championship qualification again in 1986 and lost there to Robert Marshall , he became a professional player a little later.

Beginning of professional career

Gilbert, who comes from Bedford and suffered from back problems during his career, began his professional career in the 1986/87 season , in which the Englishman was able to win a qualifying game every now and then, but only reached the main round at the British Open . There he was also immediately defeated by Dean Reynolds . However, this participation helped him to place on the world rankings, which is now ranked 99th. The next season went better, however, and Gilbert was eliminated in both the UK Championship and the British Open in the round of 64 and in the non-ranking English Professional Championship in the round of 48. He achieved his best result at the International Open when he only had to admit defeat to an opponent, namely the Australian Eddie Charlton , in the round of 16 . Because of these successes, Gilbert improved to 56th place in the world rankings.

In the course of the 1988/89 season Gilbert reached a few main rounds and mostly just missed entry into them - for example, he lost to Steve Newbury from Welsh in the final qualifying round of the World Snooker Championship . Previously, he had in the UK Championship in the round of 32 with 8: 9 against John Parrott lost after the Grand Prix , among others, Eddie Charlton and Tony Knowles had beaten in the quarter-finals with 4: 5 just against Alain Robidoux had lost . As a result of this success, he improved ten places to 46th place in the world rankings.

The following season was a little worse for Gilbert, however, and he often missed qualifying and reaching a main round. Apart from two events in the WPBSA Non-Ranking tournament series , he only succeeded in doing this in four cases: While he was eliminated in the round of the last 64 at the Grand Prix and the European Open , he only had to make a round at the Classic and the World Snooker Championship of the last 32 beaten. Nevertheless, he deteriorated in the world rankings to rank 51.

Continuous rise to rank 44 and crash

The 1990/91 season , however, was dominated by main round participation, with Gilbert seldom eliminated in qualification. His best results were again two appearances in a round of 32, this time again at the Snooker World Championship , but also at the European Open . Nevertheless, he deteriorated in the world rankings again and was now ranked 59th. The subsequent season was similar , in which Gilbert lost both at the Dubai Classic and the European Open 1992 only in the second round. Thus, he was able to improve on the world rankings again and was now ranked 50th. In the 1992/93 season , however, Gilbert was only able to win just under a quarter of his games, divided into only three of 12 tournaments: He moved at the Grand Prix and at of the UK Championship in the round of 64 and eliminated there before losing to David Roe after two wins in the final qualifying round at the World Snooker Championship . Nevertheless, the season had only a marginal effect on the world rankings, with Gilbert falling to 52nd place.

The following season again held a few more major round appearances for Gilbert; at the UK Championship he even reached the round of 32, in which Ronnie O'Sullivan was only marginally defeated 8: 9 . He then accused Gilbert of the unfair game, because Gilbert's "antics" would have got on his nerves and he could therefore no longer concentrate. In any case, Gilbert improved to 49th place at the end of the season. The trend of last season also continued into the next season , when he reached the last 48 of the European Open and the first main round of the Snooker World Championship . On the world rankings, the trend of the previous season continued and Gilbert improved to 44th place, which he could never beat.

For the 1995/96 season , however, Gilberts collapsed and he only won a single game against an insignificant Scotsman. As a result, he fell to 82nd place in the world rankings. After he never reached a main round in the next season despite significantly more wins, he fell to rank 111 and thus lost his professional status after eleven years of professionalism.

Short comeback and more life

Gilbert then took part in the WPBSA Qualifying School and the Challenge Tour , so that he could become a professional player again for the 1998/99 season . However, this season was also marked by defeats, although he reached the round of 64 at both the Welsh Open and the World Snooker Championship . In the world rankings he was only ranked 119th. After he had only participated in the World Snooker Championship in the following season and without much success, he slipped to 134th. He then did not play any other professional games and was only ranked 183 in 2001, so that he finally lost his professional status.

In the mid-2010s, Gilbert took part in the World Seniors Championship three times , but left each time in qualifying.
