Anthony "Tony" Kearney (born June 24, 1954 ) is a former Irish snooker player who was a professional player for twelve years after winning the Irish Snooker Championship in 1981 between 1984 and 1996 for twelve years. During this time he reached 65th place in the world snooker rankings, the round of 32 at the Classic 1987 and four times the quarter-finals of the Irish Professional Championship .

Career

Kearney first attracted attention when he won the Irish Snooker Championship in 1981 with an 8: 6 victory over Paddy Miley . The next year he took part in the amateur world championship and was defeated after surviving the group stage in the quarter-finals to Welsh Wayne Jones . At least this time around Kearney lived in England , where he met with the 1982 in the area around Manchester drawn Paddy Browne became friends. For the 1984/85 season Kearney was a professional player.

First professional years and successes

Kearney's first professional season didn't go too well for the Irishman: he only won two out of nine games, thus reaching the round of the last 80 of the Classic and the round of the last 64 of the British Open . As a result, he was able to place himself on the world rankings right away, even if he was only ranked 90th. In the next season , however, he did not come out in any ranked tournament on the round of 96; only in the Irish Professional Championship , a non-ranking tournament, he moved into the quarterfinals and lost there to Tommy Murphy . In the world rankings he deteriorated to 101st place as a result of the season. The 1986/87 season was much better, however , when Kearney was able to win over half of his games thanks to some non-fighting tasks from his opponents. His best ranking tournament result was reaching the round of 32 of the Classic ; at the non-ranking level it was again a quarter-final participation in the Irish Professional Championship . As a result, he improved to 65th place in the world rankings, the best place in his career.

In the 1987/88 season , however, Kearney returned to his old form and won only one game against Mike Darrington at the Grand Prix in the rankings . This win, however, helped him move into the round of 64, in which he had to admit defeat to Terry Griffiths 5-0. In addition, he again reached the quarter-finals of the Irish Professional Championship , but this did not change the fact that Kearney lost fifteen places on the world rankings. The following season , Kearney's form improved somewhat, but apart from the quarter-finals at the Irish Professional Championship and participation in the round of 64 of the UK Championship , he was mostly eliminated very early. Therefore, he slipped down on the world rankings to 101st.

Farewell to the professional tour

The 1989/90 season did not turn the game around: Kearney reached a final qualifying round a few times, but was still almost always eliminated from the qualification. Only at the UK Championship did he qualify for the main round to the disadvantage of Paddy Browne , but lost there immediately to Steve Davis . Nevertheless, he deteriorated only marginally on the world rankings to rank 104. This was also true for the next season , in which Kearney did not even reach a main round of a ranking tournament and only reached the round of 64 at the Benson and Hedges Satellite Championship when he only reached lost seven more places. But after he was able to win significantly more games in the 1991/92 season and, in addition to the round of 16 of the Irish Professional Championship, among other things, the round of the last 96 of the Snooker World Championship and the round of 64 of the Asian Open , he slipped into the world rankings 129 from.

However, over the next two seasons, Kearney's form deteriorated rapidly. He only won a fraction of his games and always lost in qualifying. On the world rankings, he fell to rank 250, which was made worse by the fact that he then did not play any more professional games, so that he was only led to 455th place. At the end of the 1995/96 season he finally ended his career after twelve years as a professional.
