The Irish Professional Championship 1988 was a professional snooker tournament without influence on the world rankings in the context of the 1987/88 season to determine the Northern or Irish professional champions. The tournament was held from February 8 to 10, 1988 in the Antrim Forum in the Northern Irish city of Antrim . After three tournament wins in a row, defending champion Dennis Taylor lost his title in the final with a 4: 9 to Jack McLaughlin . Taylor, by contrast, played the tournament's highest break with a 131 break.
Prize money
For the first time since 1981 the tournament had no sponsor, which reduced the prize pool by about two-fifths to £ 14,000, including a prize for the tournament's highest break.

final
In a purely Northern Irish final, Jack McLaughlin , who had reached his first professional final with a victory in the decider and two more wins, met defending champion Dennis Taylor , who was six-time champion for the quarter-finals and had made it to the final for the eighth time in a row .
Although the first frame went to Taylor, his opponent first took the lead 3-1 and then 4-2. After Taylor cut to 4: 3, McLaughlin extended his lead to 7: 3 before Taylor was able to reduce it to 7: 4 with a 63 break. But McLaughlin won the next two frames to win the match and tournament.
