Pascal Burke (born June 19, 1932 ) is an Irish snooker player who became an Irish amateur champion in 1974 and was a professional player between 1982 and 1993 .

Career

Beginnings as an amateur

In 1974 Burke became Irish amateur snooker champion with a 7-1 victory over Paddy Milley . In the same year he took part in the amateur world championship held in Ireland , where he failed after surviving the group stage and defeating Mohammed Lafir at Welsh Geoff Thomas . In the game for third place he managed a 4-2 victory over Eddie Sinclair . Only a few days later he took part in the professional Norwich Union Open as one of five amateurs , but he lost his opening game against the then world champion Ray Reardon . In 1976 he took part again in the amateur world championship , but was eliminated from the group stage with only two wins from seven games. For the 1982/83 season , when in addition to the World Snooker Championship , other tournaments were gradually rated as world ranking tournaments, Burke became a professional player.

First professional years

Burke played his first professional game as part of the Irish professional championship, which he lost 6-2 to Eugene Hughes . Shortly afterwards he was the only Irish player invited to the Irish Masters , where he lost 5-0 to Tony Meo . At the end of the season he lost with 9:10 against the Australian Paddy Morgan his opening game in the qualification for the Snooker World Championship . Due to these results he was not listed on the world rankings.

After Burke had already suffered another opening defeat at the beginning of the next season , he won 5: 4 against Geoff Foulds in the Professional Players Tournament, his first professional game, but was then eliminated by Joe Johnson . After two restrained tournaments he defeated his compatriot Billy Kelly and then the Englishman Bob Harris in qualifying for the snooker world championship , before failing in the final qualifying round to Mike Hallett . Still, Burke remained unlisted on the world rankings.

At the beginning of the 1984/85 season he reached the round of the last 80 of the International Open before he was eliminated by Steve Newbury . He then moved into the main round of the Grand Prix with a 5: 3 win over Mike Darrington - with which he collected ranking points, only to fail there with 1: 5 to Tony Meo. However, a three-tournament series of opening defeats followed, which was only broken with a 6-4 win over Tony Kearney at the Irish professional championship . After he failed 6-0 to Alex Higgins , he lost his opening game in the World Cup qualifying with 3:10 against Steve Newbury. By moving into the main round of the Grand Prix , he was listed on the world rankings for the first time in the coming season, and the 86th place was also the highest world rankings of his career.

Years around the 100th place in the world rankings

Burke started the 1985/86 season with three opening defeats , so that he only won his first game at the Classic . After this 5-3 victory over Dennis Hughes , he was eliminated immediately and also lost the next two opening games. Only at the end of the season - as part of the Irish professional championship - he won another game, he defeated his compatriot Paddy Browne 5: 4, before he lost a round later to Eugene Hughes . In the world rankings, he slipped out of the top hundred players and was listed in the 104th world rankings in the coming season.

At the beginning of the next season Burke moved with victories over Jack Fitzmaurice and Tony Jones in the round of the last 64 of the International Open , in which he lost 5-0 to Cliff Thorburn . After reaching the round of 96 at the Grand Prix , he lost his opening game at the UK Championship 9-0 to Mike Watterson after Burke missed eight frames and lost one frame 51:61. At the Classic , he only benefited from Jim Bear's non-fighting abandonment before losing 5-0 to Warren King . After he had reached the quarter-finals with a victory over Patsy Fagan at the Irish professional championship and had lost there to Paddy Browne, he benefited from Eddie McLaughlin's non-fighting abandonment at the British Open before he failed at the Englishman George Scott . At the end of the season he was defeated by Bill Oliver in qualifying for the World Snooker Championship with 5:10 . In the world rankings, he improved to 97th place.

After Burke had lost his opening game at the International Open against Jackie Rea at the start of the 1987/88 season , he defeated the Welshman Clive Everton at the Grand Prix before losing to his compatriot and ex-world champion Ray Reardon . The game against Everton would be the only game of the season for Burke that he won. He lost all upcoming season games, so that he only won one of eight games in the end. Nevertheless, he lost only eight places in the world rankings and finished in 105th place in the coming season.

Last professional years

The 1988/89 season was even more sobering than the previous season : During the entire season, Burke was unable to win a single game on his own, at least at the British Open he benefited from the absence of a fight from the Englishman Paul Gibson . Furthermore, he lost two times with 0: 9 and one more time with 0:10, so that at the end of the season he had only won 25 of 98 frames . This resulted in a fall to 124th place in the world rankings.

Over the next season , Burke cut back its activity sharply; instead of thirteen tournaments, he only registered for three tournaments at all. His first tournament of the season was the first event of the WPBSA non-ranking series in 1989 , where he first benefited from the elimination of his compatriot Billy Kelly without a fight and then defeated Jon Wright before he failed to David Taylor . He also took part in the Dubai Classic , where he lost his opening game 5-0 to Mick Price , and in qualifying for the World Snooker Championship , in which he was directly defeated by Jackie Rea with 4:10 . On the world rankings, he lost another thirteen places, so that he was listed in the following season in 137th place.

Also in the 1990/91 season Burke took part in exactly three tournaments. At the International One Frame Shoot-out , in which each game only went over one frame, he lost 0:94 on points against Nigel Bond , shortly afterwards he was defeated by David Greaves 0-5 at the Benson and Hedges Satellite Championship . At the end of the season he lost in the first qualifying round for the Snooker World Championship with 4:10 against Jonathan Birch . This defeat was the last professional game of his career for Burke. Although he was listed in the following season in 149th place and in the 1992/93 season - even if without a world ranking - was officially still a professional, he did not play any more games. At the end of the 1992/93 season he lost his professional status.
