Jim Bear (born January 21, 1940 ) is a retired Canadian snooker player who was a professional player for eight seasons between 1985 and 1993. After winning the Canadian snooker championship in 1980 as an amateur and losing to Terry Parsons in the 1982 final of the amateur world championship , he began his professional career a few years later. In this he reached eight rounds of the last 64 of a ranking tournament and was defeated by Cliff Thorburn in the final of the Canadian Professional Championship in 1987 .

Career

Amateur career

Bear first drew attention to himself when he reached the round of 16 of the Canadian Snooker Championship in 1977. After taking part in the Canadian Open in 1980 without much success , he won the Canadian championship against Robert Paquette in the same year. Two years later he took part in the World Amateur Championship in Calgary and lost only one game against James Giannaros in eight games in the group stage . He then defeated in the play-offs Malcolm Bradley and in the main round Paul Mifsud and Joe Grech , so that he reached the final. In this he had to admit defeat to the Welsh Terry Parsons . The next year he was allowed to participate in the Canadian Professional Championship and was only eliminated in the semifinals against Kirk Stevens . Two years later he became a professional player.

Professional years

In Bear's first professional season , the Canadian lost his opening game in a large number of tournaments. However, he also reached the third-to-last round of World Cup qualification and the round of 64 in both the Matchroom Trophy and the UK Championship . This placed him at 82nd place in the world snooker rankings, his best place of all time. After he had reached the round of 64 only at the Grand Prix the next season , he moved into this round four times in the 1987/88 season , even if it was only the penultimate qualifying round of the World Snooker Championship . The highlight, however, was the Canadian Professional Championship , in which he reached the final and lost in this against Cliff Thorburn . After two years, Bear had only marginally slipped down the world rankings when he was able to place himself at 86th place for two seasons in a row.

The next three seasons, however, were marked by early defeats. If Bear was able to win his opening game at all, he almost never made it to qualify for the main round and was eliminated in qualifying. Only at the British Open 1989 he reached the main round during this time, but was eliminated there immediately. This resulted in a crash to rank 128 on the world rankings. Since Bear then did not play any other professional games, he first lost his world rankings and in 1993 his professional status. Almost eleven years later he drew attention again when he lost to Alain Robidoux in the semi-finals of the Canadian championship .
