Tournament course
In contrast to the previous editions, at the Matchroom Trophy 1985 the best 32 players in the world rankings were placed directly for the main round and there each met one of the 32 qualifiers. In the knockout system , the game was played in the best of 9 frames mode up to and including the quarter-finals , before the semi-finals in the best of 17 frames and the final in the best of 23 frames followed.
final
The Englishman Jimmy White was in a final of a ranking tournament for the third time, despite his short career, but had previously lost in both the Professional Players Tournament 1982 and the World Snooker Championship 1984 . At the Matchroom Trophy he had defeated four players from the extended world elite with Patsy Fagan , Warren King , Dean Reynolds and Neal Foulds as well as with Steve Davis the leader of the world rankings and the defending champion. In the final he met the Canadian Cliff Thorburn , who has already been in the finals of ranked tournaments several times, but only won this at the 1980 World Snooker Championship .
White dominated the beginning of the game and took a 7-0 lead through several high breaks before Thorburn came up to 7-4. An even phase followed, in which Thorburn was able to reduce his deficit to 8: 6, before turning the game around thanks to a 113 break, the only century break of the game, and further breaks and taking the lead himself with 9:11. With a 63 break in the next frame, White came up to 10:11, but Thorburn won the 22nd frame with 38:74 and thus the game and the tournament.
