Jameson is an Irish Whiskey - brand . The distillery of the same name was founded by John Jameson in Dublin in 1780 and was distilled in Bow Street (Smithfield Village) until 1971. Today you can only visit the show distilleries of Old Jameson in Dublin , production takes place in Midleton . Jameson is one of the world's most famous whiskey brands. It is a so-called blended whiskey .

history

After crises in Irish whiskey sales in the USA ( Prohibition ) and in the UK (high import duties after Irish independence), Jameson Irish Whiskey joined the last remaining distilleries in the Republic of Ireland in 1966 , namely Power's ( John Power & Son ) and Cork Distilleries , to form the Irish Distillers (Group) . In 1975 this group opened a state-of-the-art distillery in Midleton, Cork, which can be visited. Irish Distillers Limited has been part of the French Pernod Ricard group since 1988 . As noted whisk (e) y connoisseur and reviewer Jim Murray in his book Classic Irish Whiskey , Jameson held about 75 percent of all Irish whiskey sales worldwide in the late 1990s. In 2012, total sales were 36 million liters.

Manufacturing

Jameson Whiskey is made from a mixture of malted and unmalted barley . In contrast to Scottish whiskey, the malted barley is dried in closed kilns without smoke reaching the malt. There are three firing processes. The subsequent storage takes place in oak barrels from Spain , Portugal and the USA, in which sherry , port or bourbon previously matured. The whiskey is then mixed by the Master Blender from Jameson whiskeys of different ages and barrels in order to achieve the most consistent taste possible on an industrial scale. For a consistent color, caramel is used for coloring.
