Barry West (born October 24, 1958 ) is a retired English snooker player who spent twelve seasons as a professional player between 1985 and 1997. During this time he reached number 21 in the snooker world rankings .

Career

West first drew attention to himself when he reached the finals of the northern qualifying competition of the English Amateur Championship in 1981 , but was defeated by George Wood. After losing to John Parrott in the semi-finals in 1982 and in the quarter-finals to Jack McLaughlin in 1984 , he won the Pontins Autumn Open in the same year and was defeated by Scots Jimmy McNellan in the 1985 final of the Northern qualification of the British Championship. A short time later he became a professional player.

First professional years

West's first professional season was the 1985/86 season , in which he was eliminated from only three tournaments in the qualification or in the first round and otherwise reached at least one of the first main rounds. He achieved his best result at the UK Championship , where he defeated Doug Mountjoy and was only defeated in the quarterfinals by Steve Davis . In the world rankings, he promptly placed 30. In the next season , West always reached the main round - also in the snooker world championship - but never made it past the second round in any tournament. Nevertheless, he was able to improve marginally on the world rankings and was now 29th.

The 1987/88 season was similar : again it reached the main round in all tournaments including the World Snooker Championship , but only made it to the round of 16 in the ranking tournaments in the Classic and was defeated in this by Terry Griffiths . Only in the English Professional Championship , a tournament without any influence on the world rankings, did he survive the round of 16 and advance to the semi-finals, but lost to Neal Foulds after victories over Jimmy White and Mike Hallett . In the world rankings he improved to 26th place.

Career highlight and farewell to the world's best

West was more successful in the 1988/89 season when he reached the quarterfinals at both the International Open and the UK Championship in addition to the round of 16 of the British Open and despite a defeat in qualifying for the World Snooker Championship . On the world rankings, he jumped to 21st place; a placement that he could no longer beat. Because in the following season , in addition to qualifying for the main round of the snooker world championship, he also missed a place in the quarter-finals, although he had reached the second round twice. Therefore, he lost six places in the world rankings and was now ranked 27th.

In the 1990/91 season West managed to drop out early in a row, so that he never reached the last sixteen. He won just as few games the next season and had to settle for a single participation in a round of 32 at the Grand Prix as the best result. As a result, he fell from 38th to 57th in the world rankings.

Last professional years

West's last professional years were marked by defeats, if he even won his opening game, he was mostly eliminated a few rounds later. While the percentage of his wins rose over the next three seasons before he gave way, West also had to play more qualifying games. During this time he was mostly eliminated in the round of 96 at the latest, only a few times at the beginning of the period he reached a round of 64. His best result was a participation in the round of 48 of the 1995 Thailand Open . In the world rankings, he slipped over time to places beyond 100; In 1997 he finished 179th As a result, a 3:10 defeat against Matthew Stevens in qualifying for the 1997 World Snooker Championship was West's last professional game: after twelve professional seasons he lost his professional status. He then tried to re-qualify, but couldn't make it through the WPBSA Qualifying School or the UK Tour .

Further life

In the early 2010s, West took part in the World Seniors Championship several times , but was never really successful. He achieved his best result in the 2012 edition when he qualified for the round of 16, but lost to Dene O'Kane in this .
