Clonea Castle

Clonea Castle ( Irish Caisleán Chluain FHIA ) is the ruin of a lowland castle in Clonea , about 4 km east of Dungarvan in Ireland's County Waterford .

History and description

In 1851 Doctor Charles Farran leased Clonea Castle from Rev. Walter McGuire . It was then valued at £ 20. The lease was set for one year and was extended by one year if it was not terminated. Farran agreed to move out if necessary in the event of a sale of the property.

In the 1940s, the ITA stated that Clonea Castle and the subsequent Clonea Nursing Home had been built by the McGuire family. The castle is "a square shell on the beach". Muriel Bowen (1926-2000), an Irish journalist and politician, was born at Clonea Castle.
