Wokha is a district in the east of the northeast Indian state of Nagaland .
The area is 1628 km². The administrative seat is the city of the same name, Wokha .
history
The district was created in 1973 from parts of Mokokchung .
population
According to the 2011 census, the Wokha district has 166,343 inhabitants. With 102 inhabitants per square kilometer, the district is relatively densely populated. The district is predominantly rural. Of the 166,343 residents, 131,339 people (78.96%) live in rural areas and 35,004 people in urban communities.
The district of Wokha belongs to the areas of India that are mostly populated by members of the "tribal population" ( scheduled tribes ). (2011) 156,621 people (94.16 percent of the district's population) were among them. There is not a single Dalit ( scheduled castes ) in the district.
158,544 people (95.31 percent of residents) were born in the district. A total of 4,199 people were born in other Indian states (including 3,249 people in Assam, 326 people in Bihar and 150 people in Manipur). Of the 165 foreign-born people, 137 are from Nepal.
Population development
As everywhere in India, the population in the Wokha district has been growing rapidly for decades. The increase in the years 2001–2011 was only 3.2 percent (3.18%). In these ten years the population increased by only 5,000 people. From 1960 onwards there was a strong immigration to the then sparsely populated area. This resulted in a population growth of 463% in just 50 years. The following table illustrates the development:

With the district capital Wokha (35,004 inhabitants) there is only one urban settlement in the district.

As is common in India, the district always had significantly more male than female residents. Among the youngest residents (under 7 years of age) the proportions are 51.13% male to 48.87% female.

The population of the Wokha district is linguistically very uniform. More than 90 percent of the population speak Lotha. This is followed by three languages used by immigrants: Bengali, Nepali and Hindi. The following table shows the most widely used languages:

Population of the district by confession
The Tibetan Burmese residents have converted almost entirely to Christianity in the past 100 years. The most important communities within Christianity are the Baptists, Presbyterians (Reformed), and Catholics. The Hindus and Muslims form small religious minorities and are mainly immigrants from other regions of India. The following table shows the exact religious composition of the population:

education
Thanks to significant efforts, literacy has risen sharply in recent decades. In urban areas, almost everyone can read and write. Around 85 percent can read and write in rural areas. The strong differences between the sexes and the urban / rural population are typical of Indian conditions.
