Phek is a district in the east of the northeast Indian state of Nagaland .
The area is 2026 km². The administrative seat is the city of the same name Phek .
history
The district was created in 1973 from parts of Kohima .
population
According to the 2011 census, the Phek district has 163,418 inhabitants. With 81 inhabitants per square kilometer, the district is rather sparsely populated. The district is rural. Of the 163,418 residents, 138,843 people (84.96%) live in rural areas and 24,575 people in urban communities.
The district of Phek belongs to the areas of India that are almost entirely populated by members of the "tribal population" ( scheduled tribes ). They included (2011) 157,146 people (96.16 percent of the district's population). There is not a single Dalit ( scheduled castes ) in the district.
Of the residents, 157,909 people (96.63 percent of residents) were born in the district. A total of 2,277 people were born in other Indian states (including 745 people in Assam, 702 people in Manipur and 299 people in Bihar). Of the 348 foreign-born people, 333 are from Nepal.
Population development
As everywhere in India, the population in the Phek district has been growing rapidly for decades. The increase in the years 2001–2011 was 10.3 percent (10.27%). In these ten years the population increased by over 15,000 people. Between 1971 and 2001 there was a strong immigration into the then sparsely populated area. This resulted in a population growth of 232% in just 30 years. The following table illustrates the development:
Significant places
With the district capital Phek and Pfutsero, there are only two places in the district with more than 10,000 inhabitants.
District population by gender
As is common in India, the district always had significantly more male than female residents. The male surplus has been above the Indian average for a long time. But this has normalized in recent years. For the youngest residents (under 7 years of age), however, the proportions are 52.37% male to 47.63% female.

Population of the district by confession
The Tibetan Burmese residents have converted almost entirely to Christianity in the past 100 years. The most important communities within Christianity are the Baptists, Presbyterians (Reformed), and Catholics. The Hindus and Muslims form small religious minorities and are mainly immigrants from other regions of India. The following table shows the exact religious composition of the population:

education
Thanks to significant efforts, literacy has risen sharply in recent decades. In urban areas, almost nine out of ten people can read and write. Around 76 percent can read and write in rural areas. The strong differences between the sexes and the urban / rural population are typical of Indian conditions.

economy
