Tuensang is a district in the east of the northeast Indian state of Nagaland .

The area is 2536 km². The administrative seat is the city of the same name Tuensang .

population

According to the 2011 census, the Tuensang district has 196,596 inhabitants. With 78 inhabitants per square kilometer, the district is rather sparsely populated. The district is predominantly rural. Of the 196,596 residents, 159,822 people live in rural areas (81.29%) and 36,774 people live in urban communities.

The Tuensang district is one of the areas of India that are mostly populated by members of the "tribal population" ( scheduled tribes ). (2011) 190,916 people (97.11 percent of the district's population) were among them. There is not a single Dalit ( scheduled castes ) in the district.

The population consists almost entirely of people who were born in the district. Of the residents, 191,965 people (97.64 percent of residents) were born in the district. A total of 1,906 people were born in other Indian states (including 765 people in Assam, 405 people in Bihar and 194 people in Uttar Pradesh). Of the 296 foreign-born people, 572 are from Nepal.

Population development

As everywhere in India, the population in the Tuensang district has been growing rapidly for decades. The increase in the years 2001–2011 was only 5.7 percent. In those ten years the population increased by over 10,000 people. From 1950 onwards, there was strong immigration to the then sparsely populated area. The language of the population in Tuensang District is very mixed. The four main languages ​​Chang, Khiemnungan, Yimchungre and Sangtam make up almost 95 percent of the population. Chang is the main language or one of the major languages ​​in the Circles Chingmei (3,532 people; 91.36 percent of residents), Ngoungchung (6,041 people; 98.85 percent of residents), Noksen (14,044 people; 99.03 percent of residents), Sangsangnyu (6,580 people; 99.26 percent of residents), Sotokur (3,173 people; 29.63 percent of residents) and Tuensang Sadar (26,374 people; 55.08 percent of residents). Population of the district by confession

The Tibetan Burmese residents have converted almost entirely to Christianity in the past 100 years. The most important communities within Christianity are the Presbyterians (Reformed), Baptists, and Catholics. The Hindus and Muslims form small religious minorities and are mainly immigrants from other regions of India and from Bangladesh. education

Thanks to significant efforts, literacy has risen sharply in recent decades. Still, literacy is low compared to the other districts in Nagaland state. In urban areas, 92 percent of people can read and write. In the countryside, on the other hand, only around 69 percent can read and write.
