Peren is a district in the west of the northeast Indian state of Nagaland . The administrative seat is the city of the same name, Peren .
geography
The district is located in the southwest of Nagaland state. Neighboring districts are Dimapur in the north and Kohima in the northeast. It is bordered by the state of Manipur to the east, southeast and south and the Indian state of Assam to the west and northwest . The district has an area of 1651 km². The area is mountainous and lies at heights of 800 to 2500 meters above sea level. The highest point in the district is Mount Paona.
history
The district shares the history of its region and was created by a government decree of October 24, 2003 from parts of the previous district of Kohima. More precisely from the splitting off of the six circles Athibung, Jalukie, Nsong, Pedi, Peren and Tening.
population
According to the 2011 census, the Peren district has 95,219 inhabitants. With 58 inhabitants per square kilometer, the district is only sparsely populated. The district is predominantly rural. Of the 95,219 residents, 81,429 people (85.52%) live in rural areas and 13,790 people in urban communities.
The district of Peren is one of the areas of India that are mostly populated by members of the "tribal population" ( scheduled tribes ). Among them (2011) were 84,242 people (88.47 percent of the district population). There is not a single Dalit ( scheduled castes ) in the district.
The majority of the population is made up of people who were born in the district. Of the residents, 84,481 people (88.72 percent of residents) were born in the district. A total of 6,082 people were born in other Indian states (including 3,491 people in Manipur, 1,861 people in Assam and 186 people in Bihar). Of the 428 foreign-born people, 379 are from Nepal.
Population development
As everywhere in India, the population in the Peren district has been growing rapidly for decades. The increase in the years 2001–2011 was only 4.9 percent (4.91%). In these ten years the population increased by around 4,500 people. The following table illustrates the development:

With the district capital Peren and Jalukie, there are only two places in the district that are considered cities (notified towns).
District population by gender
Since 1981, the district has - as is common in India - always significantly more male than female residents. Among the youngest residents (under 7 years of age) the proportions are 51.68% male to 48.32% female.

District population by language
The population of the Peren district is linguistically mixed. A slim majority speaks Zeliang. The three strongest language groups Zeliang, Zemi and Kuki, however, belong to almost 79 percent of the population. With the exception of Bengali and Nepali, the immigrant languages are only weakly represented. All languages spoken by more than 1000 people are shown in the following table:

Population of the district by confession
The Tibetan Burmese residents have converted almost entirely to Christianity in the past 100 years. The most important communities within Christianity are the Presbyterians (Reformed), Baptists, and Catholics. The Hindus and Muslims form smaller religious minorities and are mainly immigrants from other regions of India and from Bangladesh. education
Thanks to significant efforts, literacy has risen sharply in recent decades. In urban areas, six out of seven people can read and write. In rural areas, almost 77 percent can read and write. The strong differences between the sexes and the urban / rural population are typical of Indian conditions.
