final
The Englishman and reigning world champion Steve Davis had made it to the final in a row with a 6-2 win over Alex Higgins . He met Neal Foulds , who had reached the finals when he played for the first time.
After Davis opened the game with a 73 break and took a 2-0 lead, Foulds shortened to 2-1 and 3-2 before Davis extended his lead to 5-2. Foulds shortened again shortly afterwards before Davis took a 7-3 lead. Foulds then won another frame before Davis won the last two frames needed to win the match and tournament.
So far, Davis, who had previously won the Irish Masters in 1983, 1984 and 1987 , was record winner together with Welsh Terry Griffiths , who won the tournament between 1980 and 1982. By winning the title again, Davis rose to become the sole record winner.
