final

The Welshman and 1979 world champion Terry Griffiths only made it to the finals by winning the decider of his semi-final game. Last year's winner met six-time world champion and compatriot Ray Reardon , who also won the semifinals in the decider.

Reardon, who was in the final of the tournament in 1979 and had lost to Doug Mountjoy at the time, got off to a better start and took the lead 0: 2 and 2: 3. Griffiths then turned the match around and defended it after Reardons equalized at 5: 4. Reardon then managed to turn the match around, but Griffiths took the lead again. Reardon equalized before Griffiths got the next frame to 8: 7. With a 93-0 in the 16th frame, Griffiths then won the frame, match and tournament.
