The Irish Masters 2005 was a snooker tournament of the 2004/05 season , which was held from March 6 to 13, 2005 at the Citywest Hotel in Dublin . It was the last edition of the tournament, which had been held under this name continuously since 1978, and which had only become a world ranking tournament in 2003 .

Defending champion Peter Ebdon was eliminated in the first main round. World number one Ronnie O'Sullivan won the race . He had won three of the five Irish Masters tournaments in Dublin. He defeated Matthew Stevens from Welsh in the tournament finals 10-8.

Prize money / world ranking points

The drop in prize money from almost £ 400,000 last year to just £ 250,000 already indicated the end of the traditional tournament. Although the winner was the biggest cut, only £ 8,000 less than last year, but only the bottom 64 got a bonus. In 2004 the prize money went to the last 96 round, where it was £ 1,050, with only 96 players participating this time. Accordingly, the losers in the first qualifying round only got the minimum number of 200 world ranking points instead of 400. But there was no change up to the last 80.

Main tournament

As in the previous two years, the main round in Dublin was played with 32 players, with the top 16 of the world rankings set for round 1.

Top 32 to the final

In the tournament schedule, the top 16 players in the world were drawn from the 16 players who had previously passed the qualification. There was a major change in the mode compared to the previous year: The semi-finalists had to play up to 17 frames in two sessions until the winner was determined. In 2004, as in the quarter-finals, Best of 11 was played in a single session.

final

Matthew Stevens was in his fifth ranking final, only the 2003 UK Championship he had won so far. The world number one Ronnie O'Sullivan , on the other hand, had already won two ranked tournaments this season and the Masters right before that . The Welshman won the first frame, but then favorite O'Sullivan pulled away to 6-1. But Stevens managed the turnaround, came back to 3: 6 by the end of the session and reached the 6: 6 level in the evening. But then the world champion found his way back into the game and both played at eye level. O'Sullivan took the lead three times, and Stevens equalized twice. The 18th frame, however, turned out to be bitter for the Welshman. He was already leading 68-0 and was very close to equalizing, but O'Sullivan stole the frame with one point with a 69 break and won the game 10-8. For the Englishman it was the third Irish Masters victory and the 18th ranking victory of his career.
