2006

The Malta Cup in 2005 was a snooker tournament of the 2004/05 season , which from January 31 to February 6, 2005 in the Hilton Conference Center in the district of Portomaso from San Ġiljan was held. It was the first tournament under this name. A similar tournament had already taken place in the same place last year: It was the last edition of the European Open , which had previously taken place irregularly at different venues.

In the final, the two Scots Stephen Hendry and Graeme Dott met . The world number three Hendry defeated the vice world champion Dott with 9: 7 and got the 36th and last world numbering title of his career.

Prize money / world ranking points

As a European Open, £ 400,000 was handed out last year . As a cup of a small island state, there was only half the prize money. Nevertheless, the tournament was on par with the other smaller tournaments of the season. The biggest change was the elimination of the bonuses for the last two qualifying rounds. Conversely, the number of points for the world rankings increased . Nothing changed here for the qualifiers, but in the main tournament there were between 50 points for round 1 and 1,000 points more for the winner.

Final round

Since the Malta Cup was a nationally oriented competition, the local association was allowed to provide four wildcard players who were allowed to play for participation before the main tournament. They competed against the four lowest placed qualifiers in the world rankings . The winners then contested the main tournament together with the other qualifiers and the top 16 in the world rankings.

Wildcard round

The two ex-professionals Joe Grech and Alex Borg , as well as the amateurs Duncan Bezzina and Simon Zammit were selected for the wildcard round. But no Maltese player made it into the main tournament.

Main tournament

Ronnie O'Sullivan caused a stir once again . Because of an injury to Quinten Hann , he did not make his first appearance until round 2. A well-rehearsed Graeme Dott gave him little chance in the first two frames. When O'Sullivan missed the next color in the third frame with a 25-0 lead, he gave up the frame in frustration. He lost 0-5.

final

Both players had recently lost finals, Stephen Hendry had lost two weeks earlier at the Welsh Open , Graeme Dott had missed the title chance at the last World Cup . Both of them had already played against each other in a final: At the Scottish Open 1999 Hendry had won 9-1 against Dott. But meanwhile the balance of power had changed. A very even game developed. Hendry kept taking the lead, but Dott tended to equalize and so they left the afternoon session 4: 4. Hendry started the evening with a century break and after he was able to win the next two frames with high game-deciding breaks, he already seemed to have a decisive lead, but Dott was able to counter that and win three frames in a row himself. With a score of 7: 7 the final approached the decision and again it was Hendry who took the first step and took the lead 8: 7. Dott had to win now, but the contested 16th frame went back to Hendry, who won 9: 7.
