Prize money / world ranking points
The prize money plummeted from £ 470,000 in the previous year to £ 200,000 and heralded the end of the traditional tournament. It had only been at this low level once: that was the first time the tournament had been without a main sponsor. The winner got £ 22,000 less than last year and instead of the bottom 96, only the bottom 64 got any prize money. Nevertheless, there was no change in the points for the world rankings apart from an adjustment to the qualifying rounds.

The Scottish duel was won by Maguire, who was six years his junior and who had won his first rankings at the time. Their second encounter was for him his second final, his opponent, on the other hand, was alone at the British Open for the fifth time in the final, he had won three times before. Higgins had the better start, winning three out of four frames by the first mid-session break. But then Maguire got three frames in a row and by winning the eighth frame, Higgins was just barely able to avoid going into the evening session behind. There they shared the first two frames before Higgins achieved a series of three frame wins with two century breaks and a break of 68. It was 8: 5 and he was only missing one frame to win. Maguire was able to shorten it by one frame, but with a nearly century of 97 points, Higgins made the 9: 6 victory perfect.
