The 1999 Benson & Hedges Irish Masters was a snooker tournament as part of the Snooker Main Tour of the 1998/99 season . The invitation tournament was held from March 21st to 28th in Kill near Dublin . The tournament traditionally took place in the Goffs arena .

After his disqualification in 1998 , the final winner Ronnie O'Sullivan appeared again, but he was eliminated in the quarter-finals as well as the subsequent winner Ken Doherty . In the final, Stephen Hendry met the Englishman Stephen Lee . Like two years earlier, the Scot won just 9: 8. He drew level with Terry Griffiths , who had also won the tournament three times in the 1980s. Only record winner Steve Davis was more successful, but he is an eight-time title holder.

The winnings increased by several thousand pounds . The raises ranged from around £ 200 more in the quarter-finals to just over £ 2,000 for the winner.

final

For the fifth time since 1989, Stephen Hendry was in the final of the Irish Masters, which he had already won twice. Stephen Lee was only in a final for the second time, with his first win at the Grand Prix earlier in the season . So far they had played against each other twice, and the six-time world champion had clearly won twice.

But this time the underdog dominated the match from the start. The first two frames were still competitive, both times 43 points were not enough for Hendry to win. Lee got the next two frames by a clear margin. After the break, the Englishman even increased to 5-0 before Hendry scored the first point. However, he got the frame with a century break and took the momentum with him into the next two frames, which he also won. With 3: 5 he had reached a reasonable intermediate result at the end of the session. In the evening he made the connection with another high break, but the final turned again and frame by frame Stephen Lee pulled away again. He was already leading 8: 4 and was only one frame short of victory when the match turned again. With a competitive 13th frame, which Hendry won with a 51 break, the Scot found his way back into the game. He let two Centurys follow a break in 89 and he had equalized. After all, he didn't give Lee a chance in the decision-making frame and secured the 9: 8 victory with another high break. It was his third Irish Masters win and the third title win this season.
