The 1978 Benson & Hedges Irish Masters was a professional snooker invitation tournament for the 1977/78 season . The first edition of the tournament was held from March 8 to March 10, 1978 in the Goffs of the Irish village of Kill . The winner was the Englishman John Spencer , who defeated the Welshman Doug Mountjoy in the final. The highest break was played by the Northern Irishman Dennis Taylor .

The tournament was sponsored by the cigarette brand Benson & Hedges . The tournament's prize pool was £ 1,700 , with only the winner, finalist and the player who played the highest break receiving prize money.

Tournament course
