The 1980 Benson & Hedges Irish Masters was a professional snooker dung tournament for the 1979/80 season . It was held from February 13 to February 16, 1980 in the Goffs of the Irish village of Kill . The winner was Terry Griffiths , who defeated last year's winner Doug Mountjoy in an all-Welsh final . Terry Griffiths played the highest break with an 86 break.

Prize money

Once again, Benson & Hedges sponsored the tournament. Compared to last year, the prize pool increased by exactly £ 3,000 to £ 7,800, with about a third going to the winner.

Tournament course

The field of eight players was divided into two groups of four. After everyone had played once against all of their group opponents, the two best players in each group made it to the semi-finals. From there, the winner of the tournament was played out in the knockout system .

While three frames were always played in the group games, the semi-finals were played in the best of 7 frames mode and the final in the best of 19 frames mode.

The reigning world champion Terry Griffiths met the finalists of the two previous years and last year's winner Doug Mountjoy .

After Griffiths took a 2-0 lead, Mountjoy turned the game around and took a 2-3 lead. But Griffiths also turned the game around and took the lead 6: 3 before both games won two frames. But now Mountjoy managed to turn things around again; he first equalized at 8: 8 and then took the lead with 8: 9. With a break of 59, Griffiths forced the decider , which he won with 67:10 and with it the match and tournament.
