The Citywest Irish Masters 2002 was a snooker tournament as part of the Snooker Main Tour of the 2001/02 season . The invitation tournament was held from March 19 to 24 at the Citywest Hotel in Dublin . For the second time, the hotel in the suburb of Saggart was the event location and Citywest was the sponsor.

Defending champion Ronnie O'Sullivan lost his opening match this time. With John Higgins and Peter Ebdon two players came to the final, who had already won the tournament once. Higgins won the second victory after 2000 , he prevailed with 10: 3. For the Scot, who had won the first three tournaments of the season, it was the fourth win of the season.

For the 25th time since 1978, the tournament had been held as an invitation tournament. This made it the most traditional professional tournament after the Triple Crown tournaments. In the following season, the Irish Masters was converted into a world ranking tournament.

Almost £ 10,000 more was distributed this time than in the previous year, the winner alone received £ 3,500 more, while the other winners received smaller amounts.

final

After the Malta Grand Prix in 1995 , it was only the second time that John Higgins and Peter Ebdon met in a final. Ebdon had won then. Last year, too, he had already caused the Scotsman to be eliminated from the Irish Masters in the quarterfinals . Still, Higgins was the favorite, overtaking Ebdon in the world rankings and winning 3 of their last 4 games. He had already won three tournaments this season, while Ebdon had lost his only final. Higgins also took the lead 2-0 and 3-1 until the break. With a Century he increased to 4: 1. This was followed by two frames in which one player took the lead with a high break, but the other player stole it with a high break. After that, however, Higgins took control again and increased from 5: 2 to 7: 2 at the end of the session. The 8: 2 in the first evening frame was already the preliminary decision, Ebdon still managed the 8: 3, but Higgins then consistently finished to 10: 3. For the Scot it was already title number 22 on the professional tour.
