The China International 1999 was a snooker tournament as part of the Snooker Main Tour of the 1998/99 season , which took place from March 8th to 14th. After the tournament was launched as an invitation tournament in the preseason, it was to be established as a world ranking tournament from this year on. For this, it moved from Beijing to the east Chinese port city of Shanghai to the JC Mandarin Hotel .
The tournament debut in 1997 was won by Steve Davis , this time he was eliminated in the round of 16. The winner was the world champion and world number one John Higgins . He defeated his Scottish compatriot Billy Snaddon 9: 3. It was his fourth tournament win this season.
The Cypriot Mehmet Husnu managed a maximum break in the qualification . He was the first European with an official 147-point break that did not come from the British Isles.
After this edition, the tournament was renamed the China Open and moved from March to December. There were two tournaments in Shanghai this calendar year, but they belonged to different seasons.
Prize money / ranking points
At the 1997 invitational tournament there was only £ 10,000 as a bonus for the winner. A quarter of a million pounds was raised for the world ranking tournament. Nevertheless, it was the tournament with the smallest prize money on the professional tour.
On the other hand, there were just as many points for the world rankings as in the other tournaments apart from the UK Championship and the World Championship .

Wildcard round
China International was introduced last year to give Chinese players the opportunity to play in their home country against the professionals who mostly come from Europe. This was maintained insofar as four local amateurs were given a wild card from the Chinese Federation. Before the start of the main tournament, they played in a separate round against four professionals who had made it through to the main round. Pang Weiguo was the only one of the four selected to take part in the first edition of China International.
The wildcard games kicked off the tournament on March 8th. The Best of 9 mode (5 winning frames) applied to all games .

Century breaks
For the second time in the second edition of the tournament, a player scored a maximum break . Already in the first qualifying round, Mehmet Husnu managed the perfect 147 break and thus without camera recording. Despite the lack of an audience, it was still worth £ 6,000 as a bonus. It was the 24th official maximum in snooker history.
Main tournament
12 players scored 15 breaks of at least 100 points in Shanghai, 5 of which were achieved in the wildcard round. Michael Holt's highest television break comes from this round , for which he received an extra bonus of £ 2,500.
