John Williams (referee)
John Williams (born June 8, 1937 in Wrexham ) is a former Welsh snooker referee .
Williams was a referee in a total of eleven world championship finals; nine of them since the World Cup has been held at the Crucible Theater in Sheffield since 1977 . The finals of the 1985 World Cup , which ran over the maximum possible distance of 35 frames and set several audience records in Great Britain , achieved particular fame . He held his last World Cup final in 2002. Even after that he was still active as a referee, most recently at the World Seniors Championship .
He was also the referee for two official maximum breaks :
- 1983 at the Snooker World Championship by Cliff Thorburn against Terry Griffiths - the second official maximum break in snooker history and the first at a world championship.
- 1995 at the UK Championship by Stephen Hendry against Gary Wilkinson - the 18th official maximum break in snooker history and the third for Stephen Hendry.
