The Church of the Holy Cross near Soradir ( Armenian ՁՈՐԱԴԻՐԻ Սբ. ԷՋՄԻԱԾԻՆ վանք ) is an Armenian monastery complex from the 6th century in southeastern Turkey . It is located west of the village Yanal district Başkale the province of Van .

history

According to the conclusions of Tommaso Breccia Fratadocchi, the Monastery of the Holy Cross at Sorador or Dzoradir was built in the 6th century by a student of the architect of the St. Bartholomew Monastery . In fact, there is no evidence of structures in this area prior to the 10th century. Fratadocchi considered the church of Soradir to be the model of the Holy Cross Church of Akdamar from the beginning of the 10th century, but it was very likely a provincial imitation.

A settlement in the district of Metz Aghbak in the province of Vaspurakan in historical Armenia was located on the site . According to the Armenian inscriptions in the main church, the dome and the western threshold of the church were renewed in 582 with the support of Saro Mahtesi. After the Armenian genocide in 1916, the monastery was badly damaged.
