The 555 Asian Open 1990 was a snooker tournament as part of the Snooker Main Tour of the 1990/91 season , which was held in Guangzhou from October 29 to November 3 . The tournament was in the tradition of the Thailand Masters , but for the first time it was not held in the Thai capital Bangkok , but in China .
Stephen Hendry won the first edition of the tournament called the Asian Open . Not only did he reach the final again, but he also won the tournament for the second time. The Scottish world champion and world number one won against Dennis Taylor from Northern Ireland with 9: 3.
The last 64
The top 32 of the world rankings were set for the round of the last 64. The remaining professional players had previously played two qualifying rounds and the 32 winners were drawn into the top 32. From the round of 16, the games took place in front of television cameras in Guangzhou . In all rounds up to the semi-finals, winning 5 frames was enough to advance ( best of 9 ). The final was held in the Best of 17 mode (9 winning frames).
