Brian Rowswell (born March 18, 1967 ) is an English snooker player who spent a total of twelve seasons as a professional player between 1986 and 1999.

Career

Rowswell first attracted attention when he took part in the southern qualifying competition for the English Amateur Championship in 1985 , reached the semi-finals and lost in this 6-8 to Terry Whitthread . In the same year Rowswell tried to qualify for professional status through the WPBSA Pro Ticket Series , where he reached the semifinals in the first event and had to admit defeat in this Jon Wright . However, shortly thereafter, in 1986, he became a professional player.

First professional years

Rowswell's first professional season was the 1986/87 season , in which Rowswell, however, was eliminated in addition to two lost opening games in three tournaments in the round of the last 96, i.e. in the second round for him at this time. Only at the UK Championship , in which Eddie McLaughlins benefited from the lack of a fight and then defeated Fred Davis , and at the British Open with wins over Greg Jenkins and Dene O'Kane , he reached the round of 64, in which he but knocked out against Steve Longworth and Silvino Francisco . On the world rankings for the next season, Rowswell was thus ranked 90th.

In the next season , Rowswell was able to reduce the number of his opening defeats to a single - at the English Professional Championship - while he was eliminated in four other tournaments such as the UK Championship and the World Snooker Championship in the round of 96. In contrast, he only lost in the Classic in the round of 64 against Silvino Francisco, before he reached the round of 32 at the British Open with wins over Jackie Rea , Jack McLaughlin and Steve Longworth , where Joe Johnson had to admit defeat . For Rowswell, this meant an improvement of twenty places to 70th in the world rankings.

In the 1988/89 season , the number of Rowswell's opening defeats rose again to three, although he was able to reduce the number of his second-round defeats to four. Meanwhile, he was particularly successful in non-ranking tournaments, where he reached the quarter-finals at the second WPBSA non-ranking event and the English Professional Championship and the semi- finals at the third WPBSA non-ranking event . In the ranked tournaments, in addition to participating in the round of the last 64 of the UK Championship in qualifying for the World Snooker Championship, he recorded victories over Vic Harris , Jon Wright , Dave Martin and Dean Reynolds , before beating Eugene in the final qualifying round with 9:10 Hughes lost. Nevertheless, he lost nine places in the world rankings, so that he was now ranked 79th.

Up and down the world rankings

Also in the 1989/90 season , Rowswell was eliminated early with a total of six first or second round defeats, but Rowswells' season was much more successful than the previous ones. In addition to a round of 16 at the first WPBSA non-ranking event , he reached the round of 64 at both the UK Championship and the Classic, as well as at the Grand Prix with victories over Mike Darrington , Tommy Murphy and Cliff Wilson and at the Dubai Classic with wins over Billy Kelly , John Rea and Bob Chaperon the round of 32 in which he lost Dennis Taylor and Martin Clark respectively . On the world rankings he was able to improve by sixteen places to 63rd place in the world rankings, which remained his best world rankings for the rest of his career.

But in the following season , Rowswell's performance collapsed when, in addition to two games in which his respective opponent gave up without a fight, he was only able to win one game on his own during the entire season and lost all other games, including after the 5th: 0 win over Anthony Harris at the Asian Open against Dene O'Kane . As a result, he lost fourteen places on the world rankings, so that he was now placed on rank 77.

The 1991/92 season was somewhat more successful - despite five defeats at the beginning and one defeat in the second tournament round - when he reached the round of 64 at the Strachan Open , the European Open and the World Snooker Championship and there against Tony Meo , Wayne Jones and Alan McManus left. At the start of the season, however, Rowswell had already reached the round of 32 of the Dubai Classics with victories over Fergal O'Brien , Jim Wych and Tony Drago , in which he had to admit defeat to his compatriot Steve James with 1: 5 . Nevertheless, he lost another six places on the world rankings and was now ranked 83rd.

Promotion to rank 67

Also in the 1992/93 season he did not get past the second round in eight tournaments and thus failed relatively early in a not unimportant part of the tournaments. While he was relatively successful at the events of the Strachan Challenge minor ranking tournament series , he moved into the round of 96 at both the UK Championship and the World Snooker Championship and was eliminated there. In contrast, at the Grand Prix he reached the round of 64 with a win over Colin Roscoe and lost to Darren Morgan . On the world rankings, he slipped to 86th place.

With the next season Rowswell reduced the number of his first and second round defeats to four, while he reached the round of the last 96 at the Welsh Open and the round of the last at the Dubai Classic , the Grand Prix and the British Open . However, he achieved his best result of the season at the Thailand Open , where he defeated Anthony Hamilton and Jason Prince , among others , before losing to Tony Knowles in the round of 48 . As a result, he was able to improve by eleven places to 75th place in the world rankings.

The 1994/95 season was just as successful as the previous season, when Rowswell lost only one opening game and lost in three cases in the second round. In four other tournaments, he moved to the round of the last 96, but was eliminated there. But with victories over, among others, Jack McLaughlin and Jason Ferguson , Rowswell had already reached the main round and the round of the last 32 of the Dubai Classics at the beginning of the season , where he gave up his game against Alan McManus without a fight.

Last professional years

But with the 1995/96 season , Rowswell's form deteriorated again when he did not come out of the second round in most of the tournaments. Only at the Thailand Classic and at the International Open did he get past the second round and was eliminated in both cases - against Nick Terry and Stephen Hendry - in the round of 64. As a result, he slipped to 109th place in the world rankings.

The following season was just as mixed , in which Rowswell again only survived the first two rounds in two tournaments. However, he was eliminated from both the German Open and the European Open in the round of 96. On the world rankings, he deteriorated to 117th place, so that he lost his professional status for the first time in eleven years. In the next season , he took part in various qualifying competitions with mixed results, but then he became a professional again.

But even in the 1998/99 season Rowswell's form did not improve much when he only won his opening game in four of ten tournaments and was eliminated in each of these four tournaments in the following round. Thus, Rowswell ended his professional career at the end of the season after a total of twelve professional years, even if he was allowed to participate in the Benson & Hedges Championship as an amateur with not great success in the same year .
