The Strachan Open was a snooker tournament in the 1991/92 season , which took place from March 2 to 7, 1992. The tournament was re-launched because the professional organization WPBSA wanted to establish further ranked tournaments after the opening of the professional tour. Strachan, the leading fabric manufacturer for billiard tables, was won as a sponsor. The Thornbury Leisure Center in Thornbury near Bristol was chosen as the venue . The south-west English city of Bristol had already hosted a ranking tournament with the 1983 Professional Players Tournament .
In the absence of the first 3 in the world rankings , the top seeded Englishman John Parrott reached the final. But the winner was the up-and-coming Thai James Wattana , who won the final 9: 3. It was his first ranking
The tournament was not accepted by the top players due to its lower value and was therefore discontinued. With the Strachan Challenge , however, the following season specifically created an opportunity for the lower-placed players to play a reduced number of world ranking points.
Main tournament
The 32 highest placed players in the world rankings were set for the first round, 32 other players who had emerged from the qualification were drawn to them for the first round. Up to the quarter-finals, the best of 9 mode (5 winning frames) was played. It was unusual that both the semi-finals and the final were played on 9 winning frames (best of 17).
