The 1997 UK Championship was a snooker tournament that was held from November 10-30, 1997 at the Guild Hall in Preston . Ronnie O'Sullivan won his second title after 1993 and for the second time he beat Stephen Hendry 10: 6. The Scot missed it with a win to repeat the series of four title wins in a row by Steve Davis (1984-1987).
Prize money
For the first time in five years the prize money increased by £ 40,000 . The winner got £ 5,000 more. From 65th place there was £ 1,400 instead of £ 845 this time. Since the tournament was limited to 96 players this year, this meant a minimum entry bonus.

After six years of open tournament with numbers of participants between 441 and 577, the field of participants was limited again for the first time. A total of 96 players competed in the tournament, with 32 players seeded and from the remaining 64 players their 32 opponents were determined for the main tournament in a single qualifying round.
Main tournament
From November 10th, 64 snooker professionals competed for the title of UK champion.
Century breaks
Exactly 50 century breaks were played in the main phase of the tournament. The most successful player was Darren Morgan : Although he was eliminated in the round of 16, he managed five breaks from The Breaks during the television phase from the round of 16 are shown in italics.
