Vinnie Calabrese (born October 7, 1987 in Sydney ) is an Australian snooker player .

Career

Vinnie Calabrese was born in Campbelltown , part of the Sydney metropolis . From childhood he was in contact with snooker as his father was a snooker club operator. Already in his youth he was very successful and won numerous national youth titles. At the age of 17, he became the youngest ever winner of the Australian snooker championship .

A little later he went to Great Britain and took part in the Pontin's International Open Series to get a place on the Snooker Main Tour . Until 2010 he played repeatedly in the tournaments held in Prestatyn , Welsh , reaching the round of 16 three times. However, it was not enough to qualify for professional snooker. He also applied unsuccessfully to the follow-up event, the Q School , in 2011 and 2012 and failed in round 3 at the latest.

Calabrese's best national performances during this period were reaching the final of the Australian Open Snooker Championship in 2010, which he lost 5: 6 to Steve Mifsud , and again in 2012, where he was defeated by Shawn Budd with the same result. The following year he took part in the Oceania Championship in Port Moresby and was able to secure the title this time. Because of this success, he was nominated by the Continental Association for the Main Tour and in this way got the right to start in the professional tournaments for the next two seasons.

The Australian, who found accommodation with his compatriot Neil Robertson in England, started the 2013/14 season with a successful qualification for the main Wuxi Classics tournament . At the UK Championship , he made the round of 64 a second time after defeating Dominic Dale . In between was the successful performance at the Bluebell Wood Open , a minor ranking tournament of the Players Tour Championship . In the first round he beat the world number two Mark Selby and then reached the last sixteen. At the end of the season he survived the first qualifying round of the snooker world championship with a win over Noppon Saengkham , but since he had otherwise always lost all opening games, he never made it into the top 100 this season in the snooker world rankings Shanghai Masters qualification for the following season , he reached 79th place, his best ranking position to date. After the German Masters in February 2015, however, it fell back to 90th place. He then decided to withdraw from the Main Tour early to start over as an amateur. He appeared again at the Oceania Championship and secured the title for the second time. He was nominated by the association for the Main Tour for another two years.

At the start of the 2015/16 season , he won his opening match against an amateur at the Australian Open , followed by another victory at the Shanghai Masters . After that, however, there were only some very significant defeats. After he did not achieve any success at the China Open either, he did not take part in the final World Cup and gave up his professional status after a year.

In 2016, he reached the final of the Australian Championship for the second time in his career. He lost to James Mifsud 1: 6.
