Preliminary round

207 players had registered for the tournament, so that three qualifying rounds were necessary to put together the main field of 128 players. 104 players were seeded for the first main round, the remaining 24 were previously determined on October 1st and 2nd from among the remaining 103 candidates. Four players from the German-speaking countries had registered, three of whom had to go through the qualification. In round two there was a duel between the Austrian master Andreas Ploner and the German master Lukas Kleckers . Last year the two had met at a PTC tournament at the Paul Hunter Classic and Kleckers had clearly won. This time he was able to prevail with a clear 4: 1. However, Kleckers failed as did the second German, Daniel Schneider, in round three.

All games were played in the best of 7 frames mode. The following pairings were set for the three preliminary rounds:

Main round

104 professional players and the 24 amateurs who had previously prevailed in the qualification met from October 3rd in the Universiada Hall. The only professional from the German-speaking area, the Swiss Alexander Ursenbacher , met in round 1 with the Welshman Jamie Jones on a top 50 player and lost 2: 4.

Round 1 to the round of 16

On the first day of the tournament, World Champion Mark Selby reached the round of 16 after having to walk the full distance of seven frames in rounds one and three. Shanghai Masters winner Stuart Bingham and top ten player Marco Fu failed in the first round. In the second round is needed to Neil Robertson the Northern Irishman Gerard Greene with 1: 4 beaten. After Greene pulled away 3-0, the world number two shortened with a 133 break to 1: 3, but could not turn the game around. Defending champion John Higgins also failed 4-1 on the strong Judd Trump .

In round three there was a duel between Stephen Maguire and Shaun Murphy after both players had impressed with smooth 4-0 wins. Murphy won the first three frames in a row, laying the foundation for victory. Maguire was able to shorten it to 2: 3, but finally had to admit defeat to the “Magier” with 2: 4. In the lower half of the table, Joe Perry prevailed against number five in the world, Barry Hawkins , with a score of 3: 3 in the final on black. Judd Trump, who had shone with high breaks and clear wins in his first two games, had a hard time against Graeme Dott for a long time. The lead changed every other frame. Only after seven frames did Trump make it into the last 16 with a 59 break.

In the first round of 16 the number one, Mark Selby, prevailed 4-2 against compatriot Robbie Williams , who had previously taken the lead 2-0. In the last frame, Selby achieved his fifth century break in the tournament with a series of 108 points . Shaun Murphy beat Jimmy White 4-0 after a bizarre third frame with a total of 58 foul points and two excellent snookers on both sides. Peter Ebdon prevailed 4-2 against Joe Perry after he had had to go the full distance against Barry Hawkins one round earlier. The biggest surprise in the last sixteen was the 4-3 victory of Michael Wasley , number 102 in the world rankings, over Judd Trump. In the last frame when the score was 3: 3, Trump had already taken the lead with 73 points, but Wasley was able to turn the game around and won with 75:73.

Quarter-finals to finals

With Mark Selby and Shaun Murphy , the last two remaining top 16 players of the tournament met in the first quarter-finals. Murphy built on his strong performances and played his third century break in the competition in the first frame. The further course of the game was characterized by smaller breaks on both sides. Selby succeeded again and again, but he had bad luck several times in his split attempts, which opened up new opportunities for Murphy. With a 52 break, Selby's highest break in the game, the world champion kept the chance of reaching the semi-finals and made it 2: 3 in the meantime. Murphy remained nervous and defeated the number one in the world rankings 4-2.

Michael White prevailed against the Belgian Luca Brecel 4-2 and reached the semi-finals of a professional snooker tournament for the third time. In the second of three English duels, Martin Gould won 4-2 after his opponent Mark Davis had already taken a 2-0 lead. The last semi-final ticket was secured by Peter Ebdon against Michael Wasley , who had caused one of the biggest surprises of the tournament with his quarter-finals.

In the first semifinals, Shaun Murphy continued his winning streak and clearly beat Michael White 4-0. The number 7 in the world ranking achieved a strong 379 points in four frames. Martin Gould won 4-2 against Peter Ebdon, making it the fourth time in his career in the final of a minor ranking tournament.

final

Shaun Murphy and Martin Gould have faced each other seven times so far, with Murphy winning the game six times. In their only final encounter at the PTC Grand Finals in 2011, Murphy clearly won 4-0.

The new edition of the endgame only got off to a moderate start. After three hard-fought games in the morning and afternoon, both players looked exhausted and hole errors crept in again and again. Gould used this phase to temporarily lead 2-1 until Murphy finally found his strong form from the previous games and decided the game with breaks of 89, 99 and 63. This was the third time that the Englishman won a minor ranking tournament and the 15th title of his professional career.
