Tournament course

Group stage

On the first day of the tournament, the Chinese Ding Junhui successfully prevailed in Group 4 and was the first player to reach the semi-finals. After modest performances in previous competitions, this time he started strongly against Welsh Dominic Dale and won 4-2. In the second game, Barry Hawkins convinced with breaks of 75 and 73 against John Higgins and won clearly 4: 1. In the evening, Ding came into play much better and took a 4-1 lead. Hawkins, who had hardly found his way into the game, managed to equalize to 4: 4. In the tenth frame the Englishman played the highest break of the day with 112 points, but lost 5: 6 in the end.

In the first game of Group 2, Australian Goldfields Open winner Judd Trump and the winner of the 6-Red World Championship Stephen Maguire met . Trump designed the game offensively and managed breaks of over 50 points in all five frames, including a Century of 106. Maguire had hardly any opportunities to find the game and was finally defeated 1: 4. In the second encounter, world champion and world number one Mark Selby also won 4-1 against Steve Davis . In the evening game, Judd Trump built on his performance in the first game and prevailed against Mark Selby 6-1. Selby succeeded in making the interim 1: 2, but Trump secured the following frames with breaks of 68, 70 and the highest break of the tournament of 119 points to date.

Last year's winner Ronnie O'Sullivan successfully prevailed in Group 1 on matchday three and faced Ding Junhui in the semifinals . In the first game he defeated the Shanghai Masters winner Stuart Bingham 4-2. The game was characterized by high breaks on both sides with a total of three centurys. In the second group game, Shaun Murphy and Hong Kong's Marco Fu faced each other, both of them running after their best form and making a number of hole mistakes. Fu finally won the game 4-1, but in the evening game he had to admit defeat to a strong Ronnie O'Sullivan 6-0.

In Group 3, Allister Carter celebrated his comeback against number two in the world rankings, Neil Robertson . Robertson won the game clearly 4-0 and played two Centurys with 111 and 106 points. This is the first time the Australian has reached the quarter-finals of a professional tournament since the Australian Goldfields Open at the beginning of July. In the second game of the day, the final of the International Championship between Ricky Walden and Mark Allen was repeated . Walden, who already won in Chengdu , also beat his Northern Irish opponent 4-0. In the evening Robertson won 6: 3 against Ricky Walden in a game that featured close safety duels as well as good offensive play with high breaks, including a 134 from Robertson - the highest century break of the tournament at the time.

Semifinals

In the first semi-final, defending champion Ronnie O'Sullivan and number three in the world rankings, Ding Junhui , faced each other. O'Sullivan started strong and went into the break with a 3-1 lead. After Ding had given away several chances in the first few frames, he came back into the game with breaks of 88 and 111 and equalized to 3: 3 in the meantime. In the following frames, O'Sullivan demonstrated his offensive strength with two Centuries and another break of 91 points and finally won 6: 4. This was the second time in a row that the Englishman reached the final of the Champion of Champions.

Neil Robertson and Judd Trump faced each other in the second match of the day . After Trump had already defeated the Australian 9: 5 in his home tournament, he now triumphed again 6: 4. Robertson initially took the lead with a solid 65 break and in the following frames he also got smaller series of points, but failed several times on his split attempts or punched the ball. Trump used his chances and went into the break with a 3-1 lead. In the further course of the game the picture remained largely unchanged. Both players showed good 50s breaks, with Trump using his chances more effectively and extending his lead to 5: 3. Robertson shortened the game to 4: 5 with a 117, the highest break in the game, but then lost in the last frame after a gripping safe duel in the final on Black.

final

Last year's winner Ronnie O'Sullivan and Judd Trump met in the final. In the first session, O'Sullivan took the lead 6: 3 with an outstanding offensive game after Trump had in the meantime equalized to 2: 2. The defending champion won all six frames to zero with breaks of 50 points or more, including three Centurys of 137, 139 and 134 points. O'Sullivan set Neil Robertson's previous 134 record three times. Trump, who had convinced in the semifinals with his strong breakbuilding, had hardly had an opportunity to participate in the game, but used his three chances to secure the connection.

In the evening, O'Sullivan continued his winning streak and extended his lead to 8: 3. Already on the verge of defeat, Trump made a remarkable comeback with four straight wins. He played two Centurys of 102 and 100 points as well as two further breaks of 69 and 90. This shortened the gap to the defending champion to 7: 8. In the following frame O'Sullivan went in front with 71 points, but Trump caught up with 46 points and was again within striking distance. A foul secured O'Sullivan the important frame gain to 9: 7. With his eighth Century Break in the tournament (109), he managed to win the Champion-of-Champions-Tournament for the second time and remains undefeated after eight games in a row.
