Tournament course
The ten participating players were divided into two groups at the beginning of the tournament, in which everyone played against each other once. The two group winners finally met in a final. The games in the group stage lasted nine frames each , while the final was played in the best of 19 frames mode.
After the tournament was not held last year due to a local collision with the Masters , it took place in 1980 in the former Masters venue New London Theater . However, the tournament turned into a disaster: the players didn't like the format of the tournament, which made them play useless frames. In addition, there were hardly any spectators and no sponsor, so that the tournament, which was held again only over thirty years later, turned into a financial disaster.
Group stage
Group A
Welshman Doug Mountjoy won Group A with three wins and one loss and, thanks to a better frame ratio, was able to relegate his compatriot Terry Griffiths to second place with the same number of wins and losses. Third was the Northern Irishman Alex Higgins followed by the Englishman Graham Miles in fourth, who also relegated the Canadian Cliff Thorburn to fifth and last place thanks to a better frame ratio .

final
In the final, Doug Mountjoy and John Virgo met the two group winners. In contrast to Mountjoy, Virgo had won all of his group games, but had a worse ratio between won and lost frames.
Initially Virgo took the lead with 0: 3 and a 54 and a 56 break, but Mountjoy was able to equalize directly. Virgo then took the lead again, but Mountjoy turned the match around with the help of a 101 break to make it 6: 5. The match then developed into an open exchange of blows until Mountjoy was able to win the following two frames and thus the match and the tournament at 8: 8.
