Chokoku-ji (Takasaki)
The Chōkoku-ji ( Japanese 長 谷 寺 ), also known as Shiraiwa Kannon-dō ( 白岩 観 音 堂 ), with the mountain name Shiroiwa-san ( 白 岩山 ) is a temple of the Kimpusen beliefs ( 金 峰山 修 験 本 宗 Kimpusen shugen honshū ) of the Shugendō in Takasaki ( Gunma Prefecture ), Japan. In the traditional count it is the 15th of the 33 temples in the Kantō region .
history
According to tradition, the temple was created by priest En no Gyōja during the reign of Emperor Mommu in the years of the Shucho era (686-695).
The attachment
The temple area includes the temple gate ( ; Sammon ; 1) and the main hall ( 本 堂 Hondō ; 2) only a few buildings. The main hall has a "Gibelpartie in Chinese style" ( 唐 破 風 Karahafu ) above the entrance , as it became fashionable around 1600 in Japan. The cemetery (F) is behind the main hall.
Immediately west of the temple is a shrine, the Shirayama-jinja ( 白山 神社 ; S). The side path leads under a torii (T).
