The Welsh Open 2001 was a snooker tournament of the 2000/01 season that was held from January 24th to 28th, 2001 in the International Arena of Cardiff . It was the tenth edition of the tournament since it was launched in 1992.

Defending champion John Higgins was eliminated this time in the quarterfinals. Paul Hunter and Ken Doherty, two players who had won the tournament in previous years, made it to the final . Doherty won his second title after 1993 with a clear 9-2 win .

Prize money / world ranking points

The winnings increased by nearly £ 40,000 compared to the previous year . Nothing changed for the last 16, with the losers in the rounds up to the last 128 receiving between £ 150 and £ 1,125 more.

The number of points for the world rankings also went up . 200 to 300 points were awarded to more and more participants. However, the score was reduced to 60% if they were wagered on the round in which they were eliminated.

Final round

This year there was a fundamental change in the tournament mode. Unlike before, it was no longer a Top 64 tournament, only 32 players were still at the tables in Cardiff. Accordingly, only the top 16 of the world rankings were set for the main tournament, the players from 17th to 32nd had to qualify. This also shortened the tournament duration by two days.

The qualification for the main tournament in neighboring Newport had already taken place five months earlier in the late summer of 2000 . 16 players had prevailed and competed against the top 16 players in Cardiff on January 24, 2001.

final

This year, the winner of the second Welsh Open of 1993 KKen Doherty met the winner of 1998 Paul Hunter . For the Englishman it had been the only professional title until then. By the first mid-session break, an even game seemed to develop, twice he equaled immediately after Doherty won a frame. In the second half of the session he lost the first frame again despite a 50 break and although he always scored, Doherty had the better end to himself in all subsequent frames. With a 2: 6 deficit Hunter was already under pressure in the evening session, but although he made 44 points in a competitive first frame, Doherty punched the decisive balls in the end. After that, the Irishman achieved two higher frame-critical breaks, so that he clearly won 9: 2. It was one of the clearest victories in a Welsh Open final, only Stephen Hendry had previously won with this result in 1997 . For Ken Doherty it was the fourth title in a world ranking tournament.
