The Champions Cup 2000 was a snooker tournament of the Main Tour - 2000/01 season . It was held from August 26th to September 3rd, 2000 in the Brighton Center in the seaside resort of Brighton in the south of England . After the sponsor of the first edition of the Champions Cup had stopped its snooker commitment, The Sportsmasters Network (TSN) took over the sponsorship. In 1999 the tournament was still held in London and had 10 instead of 8 participants, but the tournament mode with group stage and final round remained the same.
While last year's winner Stephen Hendry was eliminated this time in the semifinals, his opponent in the final at the time, Mark Williams , came back to the final, but again missed the win. Hendry conqueror Ronnie O'Sullivan took the Champions Cup title with a 7-5 win.
Prize money
Last year the winner had received the entire prize money of £ 175,000 and all other participants had received nothing. This time all participants received a prize of at least £ 7,500, up to and including the winner, who received £ 100,000. The price pot was therefore £ 25,000 more than in 1999.

Group stage
6 players had agreed on all titles in the preseason and were represented at this tournament at the start of the season. In addition, the two-time finalist Stephen Lee and the crowd favorite Jimmy White were invited. The 8 players were divided into 2 groups, in which everyone played against everyone. The two best players then progressed to the semi-finals of the elimination round. Since there were 2 fewer participants this year, there were also fewer group games. Instead, the game was no longer played on 4, but on 5 winning frames ( Best of 9 mode ). In both groups, the favorites prevailed and so the top 4 in the world rankings also all reached the semi-finals.

final
While Mark Williams was inferior to then world champion Stephen Hendry last year , this time he was the reigning world champion and world number one favorite against Ronnie O'Sullivan . The last meeting a few months earlier in the final of the Scottish Open , however, the Englishman had clearly won 9: 1. But this time Williams tackled the match offensively and took the lead 2-0 and 4-1, with a break of over 50 points in all 5 frames. But then it was O'Sullivan who came up again with high breaks and fought for an equalizer and then even the 5-4 lead. Williams was able to equalize again, but then the Englishman secured the 7: 5 victory with two frame-decisive breaks. For O'Sullivan it was the 16th professional win in 11 defeats, Williams had lost for the 8th time in his 20th final.
