The Northern Ireland Trophy 2008 was a snooker tournament of the 2008-09 season that was held from August 24th to 31st, 2008 at the Waterfront Hall in Belfast . It was the third and last time that this tournament was held as a Northern Irish world ranking tournament. It was not until 2016 that a main tour tournament was brought to Belfast again with the Northern Ireland Open .
Defending champion was the Scot Stephen Maguire , this time he was eliminated in the quarter-finals against the eventual finalist Dave Harold . The winner was world number one Ronnie O'Sullivan , who won the final 9: 3 against Harold. It was his 20th title in ranked tournaments.

Final round
The opening tournament of the 2008/09 season was the only tournament that was played as a top 48 tournament. In all other tournaments 32 players competed in the main tournament.
Round 1
In the other tournaments of the season, all four qualifying rounds were held together in Prestatyn and Sheffield. In the Northern Ireland Trophy, the final round was moved to Belfast as the first round of the main tournament. The 16 winners of the qualification competed against the players from 17th to 32nd place in the world rankings .
Top 32 to the finalThe top 16 of the world rankings were set for round 2 and played against 16 winners from round 1. finalFor Dave Harold it was the third ranking final of his career after 14 years of dry spell. Ronnie O'Sullivan not only had numerous titles and finals to show, he had a second chance to win the tournament after losing the 2006 final to Ding Junhui . The preliminary decision in this final was made in the first session. Harold only won the first frame and then lost six games in a row. Ronnie O'Sullivan only needed to defend the 6: 1 lead in the evening session and made the 9: 3 victory perfect.
qualificationThe qualifiers took place from August 15th to 17th at the Pontin's Center in Prestatyn . In round 1, the places 65 to 96 of the world rankings played against each other, the winners met in round 2 on places 49 to 64, in round 3 numbers 33 to 48 were added. kl. = without a fight Century breaks14 players scored 24 breaks of at least 100 points in the main tournament, a quarter of which was due to Ronnie O'Sullivan . There were 15 Centurys in the three qualifying rounds spread over 13 players. A total of only 39 Century Breaks was the lowest result of all comparable tournaments of the season and also significantly less than in the two previous years at the Northern Ireland Trophy.
