Wayne Cooper (born June 9, 1978 ) is an English snooker player from Bradford . In two seasons in the 2000s he was active as a professional on the Snooker Main Tour .

Career

Wayne Cooper was a successful player in England at a young age and reached the quarter-finals (or the semi-finals of the southern group) at the English championship in 1998 . He also wanted to become a professional snooker, but the field of professionals was limited and the UK Tour was introduced as a qualification series for amateurs . The first tournament had over 400 participants and although he made it to the 9th round, he hadn't even made it into the last 128. It was not until 2001 that he tried it a second time on the qualification tour renamed Challenge Tour. In the last tournament he reached the semifinals, where he lost to the tour winner Shaun Murphy . In the 2001/02 season he was allowed to take part in professional tournaments and already at the LG Cup he achieved his first professional victory over Wayne Brown . Four more times he won his opening matches, including twice against the Scot Martin Dziewialtowski , but since he never got past the second round, he lost his professional status after a year.

In the following years he was active as an amateur and had his most successful year in 2004 when he reached the final of the English championship, where he was defeated by David Lilley 6-8 . He also reached the final at a Pro-Am tournament (tournament with professionals and amateurs) in Prestatyn and lost there 3: 5 against the professional Stuart Bingham . At the national championship he then reached the semi-finals twice. In 2007/08 he was so successful as an amateur throughout the season that he was number 1 in the English Association and was awarded the EASB wildcard for the following professional season.

He started the 2008/09 season with a 5-1 win over Lewis Roberts . After that, however, the defeats lined up and only at the Welsh Open in the second half of the season did he win another match. Even the opening win in the final World Championship with 10: 9 against Scott MacKenzie could not prevent his second farewell to the Main Tour as 90th of 96 players.

Cooper was particularly successful on a regional level, he is a record holder with 10 titles at the championship in his hometown Bradford , he won four times in Yorkshire County , in addition to several league titles with the team. He played in the local club for more than 20 years before ending his career in 2017 at the age of 39 for professional and personal reasons.
