John Allen Williams

John "Jay" Allen Williams (born June 20, 1945 ) is an American political scientist . He is a professor at Loyola University Chicago .

Life

Williams studied at Grinnell College ( BA 1967) in Grinnell, Iowa and the University of Pennsylvania ( MA 1968, Ph.D. 1976) in Philadelphia. His doctoral thesis was supervised by Henry Teune .

From 1971 to 1973 he was an instructor in political science and history at the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland and from 1975 to 1977 lecturer in political science at the University of Philadelphia. In 1976 he was Visiting Assistant Professor at Temple University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. From 1990 to 1996 he was Chair of the Department of Political Science at Loyola University Chicago in Illinois; he is a professor of political science. In 1994 he was a visiting scholar in the Department of Sociology at Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois. His main research interests are civil-military cooperation , international security policy, and American foreign and defense policy.

From 2003 to 2013 he was President of the Inter-University Seminar on Armed Forces and Society in Chicago; he was also a past president of the International Security and Arms Control Section of the American Political Science Association . He is currently on the Board of Directors of the Pritzker Military Museum & Library and writes for various journals.

Williams is a retired captain in the United States Navy Reserve . So he served u. a. on the USS Columbus (CG-12) , the United States Naval Academy , the Joint Chiefs of Staff , the Office of the Secretary of Defense , and Naval War College .

He is married and has two children.
