The Mülheim (Ruhr) Hauptbahnhof underground station is a light rail station in Mülheim an der Ruhr and is located under the main station that gives it its name . It is the main junction of the light rail vehicles in Mülheim an der Ruhr and, besides Mülheim Stadtmitte and Aktienstraße, is the only station where several rail-bound local transport systems intersect in Mülheim an der Ruhr. At the other two stops, however, the other rail-based local transport vehicles are crossed above ground.
There are connections to the neighboring cities of Duisburg and Essen .
Location and structure
The underground station is located under the actual main train station . The facility has four tracks with two island platforms, it is served by two transport companies with three light rail lines: U 18, 102 (both Ruhrbahn , former EVAG and MVG ) and 901 ( DVG ). The meter-gauge line 102 in the direction of Uhlenhorst and the standard-gauge line 901 from and to Duisburg share one platform , the line 102 in the direction of Dümpten and the again standard-gauge urban railway line U 18 from and to Essen share the other platform.
Both platforms can be reached via escalators . One level above the platforms there is a connecting corridor to the north to the platforms of the railway and the North and West Entrance (Dieter-from-the-Siepen Square) , south to Bus Stop in bus tunnel and Forum City leads . The Kaiserplatz can be reached through the Forum City .

history
The underground station went into operation on May 28, 1977 as part of the commissioning of the Essen – Mülheim light rail line . This replaced the Essen – Mülheim tram route (lines 8 and 18). Line 102 was added later in the 1980s, which enables a faster connection to the Dümpten district thanks to the underground route at the main train station, while the route to Broich was still above ground via a temporary ramp. The third and last line came after the opening of the Ruhr tunnel on September 19, 1998, the Duisburg tram line 901, which until then ended at the above-ground Mülheim Stadtmitte stop.
The two middle platform edges for line 102 had been designed for operation with low-floor cars since the concept phase, while the two outer platform edges were initially intended for high-floor cars. At the southernmost edge of the platform, the high-floor wagons of the Essen city railway line U 18 turn accordingly. The platform track used by the Duisburg line 901 had to be graveled for adjustment and moved to the edge of the platform.
The trains of lines U18 and 901 run on regular , those of line 102 on meter gauge . The common section of lines 102 and 901 in a westerly direction is designed as an asymmetrical four-rail track due to the different car widths and separates immediately after leaving the ramp on Duisburger Strasse.
The station was designed with the intention of connecting the two standard gauge lines from Essen and Duisburg in Mülheim and operating them continuously. However, to this day the only thing the two routes have in common is the gauge. Both the clearance profile and the possible platform height as well as the different signal and control systems and, above all, the wheelset and track geometry differ from one another.
While the standard gauge lines in Essen are model lines for the Rhein-Ruhr urban railway with wheelset and track dimensions according to the long-distance railway standard, the lines of the Duisburg transport company and the Rheinbahn connected to it are designed for narrower wheel flanges, steeper flank angles and larger rear surface distances, which are built according to tram standards. To date, the two standard gauge lines are not connected.
For financial reasons, there was neither a through-connection nor a joint operation in the Mülheim city tunnel, although this would be possible if points with movable frogs or wing rails were used. As a result of the fact that mixed operation has not been introduced, passengers generally have to change platforms on the main route Essen – Duisburg originally planned.

Other bus and tram lines
In addition to the underground station , the main train station can also be reached via the four stops Hauptbahnhof , Hauptbahnhof north entrance , Dieter-aus-dem-Siepen-Platz and Kaiserplatz . These are served by the following bus and tram lines.
Central station (bus)
The Mülheim an der Ruhr Hauptbahnhof bus stop is right next to the underground station. It is covered and is in a bus tunnel. The buses of all bus routes in the city center stop there. These are:
The bus tunnel is closed during night traffic. Instead of the Mülheim Hauptbahnhof stop, the NE lines serve the Hauptbahnhof Nordeingang and Dieter-aus-dem-Siepen-Platz stops .
Central station north entrance (bus) / Dieter-aus-dem-Siepen-Platz (NE)
The main station north entrance stop is approached by the bus lines ending at the main station in only one direction, as they turn via this stop via a loop. Bus routes 124 and 133 serve this stop in both directions, as they return to Eppinghofer Straße.
The bus tunnel is closed during night traffic, so that instead of the Hauptbahnhof stop , the NE lines serve this stop or the Dieter-aus-dem-Siepen-Platz stop west of the Hauptbahnhof .
The Dieter-aus-dem-Siepen-Platz stop is a purely NE stop and is located on the square of the same name next to the main train station. The bike station and the west entrance of the main train station are directly opposite. The stop was set up because the buses can no longer run across Kaiserplatz since the traffic calming on Leineweberstraße, so that the NE lines now run directly past the western area of the main station.

The Kaiserplatz stop is about 200 to 300 meters south of the west entrance of the main train station at the southern end of the Kurt-Schumacher-Platz station forecourt . The Forum City Mülheim is located between the Hauptbahnhof underground station and the Kaiserplatz stop . The stop can be reached with a maximum of five minutes on foot from the Hauptbahnhof underground station through the Forum-City or via Kurt-Schumacher-Platz.
