Ernst-Christoph Meier

Ernst-Christoph Meier (* 1956 in Schopfheim ) is a German political scientist and ministerial official . From 2006 to 2012 he was director and professor of the Social Science Institute of the Bundeswehr .

Life

Meier attended the Theodor-Heuss-Gymnasium Schopfheim and, after graduating from high school, studied political science and German at the Christian-Albrechts-Universität zu Kiel , the University of Vienna and the Albert-Ludwigs-Universität Freiburg from 1976 to 1983 . After the state examination for higher teaching qualifications, he studied for two years at the Paul H. Nitze School of Advanced International Studies at Johns Hopkins University in Washington, DC In 1986 he was awarded a dissertation on German-American security relations and at the Albert Ludwig University of Freiburg the NATO double decision. The effects of internal NATO divergence of interests on the nuclear policy of the Alliance for Dr. phil. PhD. He previously interviewed officials from the US Carter and Reagan administrations.

From 1987 to 1988 he was a consultant for the Science and Politics Foundation (SWP) in Ebershausen. In 1988 he moved to the planning staff at the Foreign Office in Bonn. In 1989 he became a consultant in the command staff of the armed forces (Fü S) in the Federal Ministry of Defense , where he was responsible for military policy and arms control until 1996. He then became a ministerial advisor and head of the department of the Federal Minister of Defense's planning staff (PlStab). From 2006 to 2012 he was director and professor of the Social Science Institute of the Bundeswehr (SOWI) in Strausberg. Since 2014 Meier has been Head of Division in the Politics II subdivision in the Federal Ministry of Defense, where he is responsible for arms control , confidence building, non-proliferation and the OSCE ( Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe ).

His main research interests are in the areas of non-proliferation policy, arms control and security policy . Meier publishes a. a. a dictionary on security policy , the eighth edition of which appeared in 2012.
