Detlef Bald (born May 1, 1941 in Plettenberg ) is a German political scientist and military historian . From 1971 to 1996 he was scientific director at the Social Science Institute of the Bundeswehr in Munich. Since 1996 he has been working as a freelance journalist mainly in the field of peace research, as well as on the resistance of the White Rose and Dietrich Bonhoeffer .

Life

Bald's ancestors come from the Sauerland . He was born in Plettenberg, Westphalia , in 1941 . His grandfather worked in iron processing . During the time of National Socialism , his father Hugo HJ was regional leader in Bochum , and his mother distanced herself from the Association of German Girls after the outbreak of war . Soon was married to Brunhild Bald, b. Prussia.

From 1952 he grew up in Essen and attended the Essen-Werden high school . During his school days he was head of the school and editor of the school newspaper . After graduating from high school in 1962, he studied political science and history as well as education , philosophy and English at the Albert Ludwig University of Freiburg . Scientists such as Arnold Bergstraesser , Gerhard Ritter and Hans-Günter Zmarzlik shaped his generalist course. In 1965 he became a research assistant at the newly founded Arnold Bergstraesser Institute for cultural studies research in Freiburg, which was headed by Dieter Oberndörfer . There he turned to development policy , including archival studies in London. Soon he was also active in student self-administration , as spokesman for the historical student council and as a member of the AStA . In 1966/67 he passed the 1st state examination.

From 1967 to 1970 he was a research assistant at the seminar for political education at the University of Frankfurt am Main , combined with a teaching position for the government system of the Federal Republic of Germany , the international situation and developing countries . This period aroused his interest in international politics . Inspired by Oberdörfer and Gottfried Schramm began in 1967 at the Faculty of the University of Freiburg his promotion to Dr. phil. with the dissertation German East Africa 1900–1914. A study of administration, economics, and interest groups that he submitted in 1969.

Instead of an academic career to pursue, he decided on the date new topic military and went for it on the by Thomas Ellwein built Scientific Institute of education in the armed forces . There he worked with the then Federal Minister of Defense Helmut Schmidt (SPD) on his educational reforms in the armed forces and established international contacts with military sociologists as part of his work . From 1971 to 1996 he was scientific director and from 1975 head of the project area "Military and Society" at the Social Science Institute of the Bundeswehr (SOWI) in Munich. He also became a member and temporarily chairman of the Working Group on the Military and Social Sciences (AMS). The AMS initiated the military and social sciences series at Nomos Verlag . In particular, the Bundeswehr General Wolf von Baudissin had a great influence on Bald's work with the concept of Inner Guidance . Soon, from 1972, he was teaching international politics with Gottfried-Karl Kindermann at the Geschwister-Scholl-Institute of the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität in Munich .

In the 1970s he made contacts with the Institute for Peace Research and Security Policy at the University of Hamburg (IFSH), where he was active in the research group “Democratization of Armed Forces” (DemoS). Soon became co-editor, then a member of the advisory board, of the magazine Sicherheit und Frieden , co-editor of the yearbook for historical peace research and the book series Peace and War. Contributions to historical peace research and spokesman for the historical peace research working group . He was also involved in the Evangelical Academy in Tutzing . He published in magazines such as Wissenschaft und Frieden , Mittelweg 36 and papers for German and international politics . Soon became a member of the support group of the pacifist working group Darmstädter Signal and in the past acted as a speaker a. a. at the Peace Research Group.

He became a critic of maintaining tradition in the Bundeswehr. In June 1998, on the occasion of the Inner Leadership Forum in Bonn, in his speech given to high-ranking officers and subsequently criticized , he urged reforms in the general staff course and in military training. Soon there was a frequent interview partner for critical reports about the Bundeswehr in the magazines Panorama, monitor, in broadcasts of the BR, the NDR and the Deutschlandfunk. Since 1996 he has been working as a freelance historian and journalist in Munich. He published several works on military and contemporary history as well as on peace policy issues, which were mainly published as working papers by SOWI and as books by Aufbau-Verlag , Klartext Verlag and Nomos Verlag. Soon was not only a historian oriented towards military and security policy, another focus of his work since the end of the 90s was resistance with reference to Munich: the White Rose . His archive studies opened up new perspectives. This was followed by concentration on the life and work of Dietrich Bonhoeffer. Its results were primarily published in the magazine “Responsibility”. Soon has volunteered in the field of Protestantism. In the 1990s he was a member of the Munich Synod, and since then has also been on the board of the Evangelical Educational Organization and other regional church bodies. During the years of preparation and construction of the synagogue and the Jewish community center on St.-Jakobs-Platz, he was an active member of the board of the association. Since 2008 he has been a member of the board of the Dietrich Bonhoeffer Association (dbv); from 2015 to 2019 he was chairman of the dbv. In 2002 he was awarded the citizen medal "Munich Glows" by the City of Munich for his commitment to peace politics.
