The Essen-Werden high school is a municipal high school in the city of Essen in the Werden district . The grammar school teaches in secondary levels I and II and offers dance as an Abitur subject .

history

The grammar school goes back to the monastery school which St. Liudger founded in 799 to train priests there. Although no written evidence has come down to us, this is very likely as it is part of the rules of the Order of St. Benedict belonged. In the 16th century, under Abbot Heinrich Dücker, the school became a full high school with a seminary so that the novices could study in Werden until they were ordained a priest. The abbey's Latin school made it possible to study at a university. After secularization in 1803, it passed into the care of the Prussian state and became a "higher Catholic rectorate school". At the same time a Protestant school was founded. In 1906 the Protestant and Catholic schools were merged and transferred to the city of Werden.

Municipal high school

In 1929 the city of Essen took over the grammar school and initially continued to run it as a boys grammar school. Three years earlier, in 1926, the factory owners Julius Forstmann and Ernst Simon had made it possible to build the current school building in Grafenstrasse and in 1928 to add the current auditorium. Immediately after the end of the Second World War in 1945, the image of the school began to change, the musical field and theater acting became more important. The musical branch was not officially expanded until 1965, and the school was now also open to girls. The school was and is known nationwide for good music education. As a cooperation partner, the Folkwang University of Applied Sciences offers particularly talented students further support in this area.

In 1991, in addition to German (LK), English (LK), French (LK) and Latin , Italian was also offered as a subject in order to promote the linguistic area. With the introduction of Spanish as a subject in 2015, the grammar school became a European school .

From 2004, the natural sciences were also funded. Thanks to some sponsors, the school has a very well-developed collection of teaching experiments for the subjects of physics, biology and chemistry. The school has had the MINT-EC seal since 2015 . In this area, the subjects biology (LK), physics , chemistry (LK), computer science (LK), biochemistry and mathematics (LK) are taught.

dance

The Essen-Werden high school enjoys a very good reputation nationwide because of its special commitment in the dance department . It is the only school in Germany that offers dance as an Abitur subject. and is therefore ideal for girls and boys who are aiming for a professional dance career but do not want to do without the general university entrance qualification . For RUHR.2010 , the main cultural year , the Essen-Werden high school took part in the EU TWINS project The Three Veils of Europe: The Myth of Europe in the Dance of Young People , together with dance students from the partner schools in Grenoble (France) and Bytom (Poland) . The aim of the project was to create a culture-specific choreography, which was then brought together and presented in a joint choreography in summer 2010.
