The Viktoria-Gymnasium (until 2008 Viktoriaschule ) is a general education high school near the Essen city center in the Südostviertel district . The school building on Kurfürstenplatz, which was inaugurated in 1914, and the director's residence are now on Essen's list of monuments . The Viktoria-Gymnasium will be merged into the Burggymnasium Essen at the end of the 2019/20 school year . The approximately 350 students (originally around 700) are taught by around 35 teachers (originally around 50).

history

Initially, the school was located in the rooms of the then newly built elementary school on Friedenstrasse, which has been called Kleine Steubenstrasse since 1967. The grammar school was founded in 1912 as an offshoot of the Luisenschule with the name Viktoriaschule as a lyceum with a university . It is one of the oldest still existing high schools in the city of Essen and was named after Viktoria Luise von Prussia . During the Second World War , the building was badly damaged in bombing raids. The restoration took several years.

Originally an all-girls school, the Viktoriaschule was also opened for boys as part of the co-education from the 1974/75 school year . At the beginning of the 2008/09 school year, the Viktoriaschule Essen was renamed Viktoria-Gymnasium Essen in order to avoid confusion with a primary school in Essen and to make its function as a grammar school clear. The future of the school as an independent high school was initially uncertain, as the number of student registrations for the 2017/18 school year no longer reached the required minimum number of registrations. The school location could not be preserved even through cooperation with the surrounding schools.

architecture

The building was built from autumn 1912 and inaugurated on April 23, 1914. The contract was carried out by the architect Albert Erbe of the building construction department. It consists of three building wings with a central pavilion on three floors. Special features are the hipped roof in combination with the curved mansard roof , bricked-up stone blocks, a round copper-covered canopy and the column-supported entrance with the original door leaf. The building has been a listed building since 1989.
