The Essen Nord-Ost grammar school (alternatively GENO or Nord-Ost grammar school ) is a grammar school for secondary levels I and II with full-day operation in secondary level I in the Nordviertel district of Essen . The school's motto is: Live - learn - design all day .

history

The GENO started on August 1, 1967 with 64 students, at that time still as the Goethe School - Sessenberg branch in the building of the Essen commercial teaching institute in the Ostviertel district . The reason was the “school flood” that posed major problems for the Essen high schools. 100 new registrations have already been registered for the school year 1968/69. With the election of the first headmaster Günter Schomaker on June 19, 1968, the Essen North-East grammar school was officially founded with the addition of "Mathematical-Natural Science School in Essen". Co-education was introduced at the same time .

In 1972, after negotiations with the responsible authorities , it was decided to build a new school center , as the growing number of students (1971/72: 769 boys and girls) meant that the temporary buildings on Frillendorfer Strasse could no longer be operated. For example, the school assembly on the topic had to be held in the auditorium of the Alfred Krupp School , as the GENO had neither an auditorium nor another sufficiently large meeting place. On September 18, 1973, the building complex on Katzenbruchstrasse was able to commence operation, although only the classrooms and specialist rooms had been completed by then; a gym was still missing .

In 1977, the GENO reached the record level of 1298 registered students in October . The completion of the second construction phase made the spatial situation much easier. After the introduction of the gymnasiale Oberstufe , a total of 1572 students achieved the Abitur between 1976 and 1993 .

In 1991 the number of pupils fell to a low of 651. In the same year all-day school was introduced. In the following years the number of pupils increased again, up to around 1000 in 2005. In the course of the expansion to realize full-day operation, the pedagogical center with cafeteria and auditorium, the self-learning center (2002), a small sports facility (2003) and a beach volleyball facility were built Plant (2004).

Projects and learning opportunities

languages

In addition to the usual subjects, the Essen Nord-Ost grammar school also offers courses in Russian and Spanish after reaching the upper level . French and Latin are offered as a second foreign language alongside English from the 6th grade. In addition, GENO offers the opportunity to acquire the so-called DELF certificate (“Diplôme d'Etudes en langue française”).

All day offer

The GENO was conceived as an open all-day school for the pupils of the secondary levels I and II; In addition to lunch in the cafeteria, the afternoon offer includes task supervision, the “class teacher block”, remedial lessons in small groups, working groups and leisure activities (student library, the “CaféCult” and a games pavilion).

In 2009 around 30 working groups from the fields of sport, art, handicraft and other creative or project-oriented areas were offered, some of which are managed and organized by high school students. Teachers also offer working groups.

Summer school

Since 2007, GENO has carried out a funding project for weaker students in which retired teachers ( “Team 65” ) gave voluntary lessons during the summer holidays. The summer school lasted one week each.

ZEUS

The Gymnasium Essen Nord-Ost participates in the project ZEUS ( Ze itung U nd S part chule), which in Essen by the publishers of the WAZ and NRZ is supported. Level 8 students receive the daily newspaper, read and discuss it in class and create articles that are published in the local section.

Project 17/70 - Young godparents for seniors

In this program of the Essen volunteer agency , around 50 pupils from different Essen schools are involved in looking after the elderly. The participants are initially trained for 4 months before they volunteer for a year .

There were theater performances in 2009 ( hypochondria or the imagination of being sick and The 6a takes a trip to antiquity ) and 2010 ( Die Physiker ).

Support association

The " Förderverein Gymnasium Nord-Ost" has existed since 1969 and has around 250 members. Among other things, he provided support for the establishment of the school library (1991), the construction of the small sports facility (2003) and the construction of a ramp for the disabled to the “CaféCult” (2007).
