The Mariengymnasium Essen-Werden is a Catholic school in the Essen district of Werden . The school body is the diocese of Essen .

history

As the Marienschule it was founded in 1858 by Pastor Cöllmann as a Catholic secondary school for girls. The order of the daughters of the Holy Cross took over the sponsorship .

Due to the National Socialists, the Marienschule was closed at the end of the school year 1937/38, but it was able to resume school operations in October 1945. In 1993 the religious school became a diocese school: the diocese of Essen took over the sponsorship and in 2007 a new school building on Brückstrasse in Werden could be moved into. The Marienschule became the Mariengymnasium. The Mariengymnasium has also been accepting boys since summer 2010. Girls and boys are taught separately according to the concept of parallel monoeducation .

Architecture and buildings

The Mariengymnasium moved into a new school building in January 2007, which was designed by the architects Hahn Helten und Assoziierte, Aachen. The building won the school construction award of the state of North Rhine-Westphalia in 2008 and the architecture award of the city of Essen in 2010.

Educational work, equipment and offers

At the Mariengymnasium English, Latin and French as well as Italian are taught as foreign languages. It is possible to take the DELF exam and the Cambridge certificate. In the compulsory elective area of secondary level 1, computer science, politics and economics as well as educational sciences are offered in addition to the third foreign language. The school has two specialist rooms each for the subjects biology, chemistry, computer science, art, music and physics as well as a triple sports hall. There is also a self-study center with PC workstations and a school library, as well as a "room of silence" for meditation or relaxation and a co-working space for the upper level. The educational work is supported by a school chaplain and a school psychologist. Midday and afternoon care is provided by the SKFM .

public relation

The Mariengymnasium is supported in its work by the friends' association. There is a regular exchange with schools in France (St. Tropez), Italy (Brescia, Istituto Veronica Gambara) and Poland (Chorcow, Lyceum). There are two charitable school projects at the Mariengymnasium. The SERPAF daycare center in Sete Lagoas, Brazil and the children's palliative network Essen are financially supported in their work. A commemorative publication was published for the 150th school anniversary. Every year, on the third Saturday in January, a meeting of the former students takes place, which is also attended by former teachers.
