The Nikolaus-Groß-Abendgymnasium is the advanced training college of the diocese of Essen . The second educational path school is church-sponsored and has its own school building in Essen's south-east district .

Educational program

In one and a half to three and a half years of further education, students can achieve the general higher education entrance qualification , the technical college entrance qualification or the technical college entrance qualification . Lessons take place on weekdays, depending on the course offer, either only in the morning, only in the evening or alternately for those working in shifts (see below). The training is free.

A course is divided into semesters. In the preparatory phase (preliminary course) and in the introductory phase (semesters 1 and 2), lessons take place in class. From semester 3 to semester 6, the course phase of further education, students choose courses from the school's offer according to their interests. The advanced training ends either after semester 4 with the technical college entrance qualification, or after semester 6 with the general university entrance qualification (Abitur).

history

The grammar school was founded on October 1, 1959 (first day of class) by the Essen bishop Franz Hengsbach under the name "Episcopal Evening High School ". While originally only male students were accepted for the evening courses, the school, which is sponsored by the Diocese of Essen, has expanded since 1969 by accepting female students, so that in 1970 a compulsory optional subject could be introduced. The previous location on Burgplatz in Essen, next to Essen Minster , was given up in 1973 and the school moved to today's larger building on Franziskanerstraße in Essen's southeast quarter, near the city center.

The number of continuing education courses doubled, and since 1974 the courses have started not only annually, but also in spring and after the summer vacation. In 1982, the current course system was offered for the first time, in which students can choose between advanced and basic course subjects. The pure evening school operation was expanded in 1991 with the introduction of morning courses so that mothers with children of kindergarten and school age also had the opportunity to continue their education.

The second Ruhr bishop, Hubert Luthe , named the school Bischöfliches Nikolaus Groß Abendgymnasium in 1995 . The school was named after the resistance fighter Nikolaus Groß, who was executed by the National Socialists in 1945 and beatified in 2001 . In 2000, a change in the law in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia gave the school the addition of Nikolaus-Groß-Abendgymnasium - Further Education College of the Diocese of Essen .

In the 1996/1997 school year, a flexible time system that is unique in the country was introduced. In certain years, the same teachers give lessons in the mornings and evenings in parallel, so that shift workers in particular have the opportunity to take part in further training. The students decide for themselves whether to visit in the morning or in the evening without prior notice. This shift system is carried out in most years.

School-related activities

In addition to teaching in the second educational path, the Nikolaus Groß Abendgymnasium has offers for students' leisure time. School trips to England or Rome take place every year, for which not only students but also former students of the school can register. Projects accompanying the course also take the students on one-day excursions to historically significant locations in the Ruhr area. Furthermore, cultural events are offered for all members of the school community, such as the Cafe Litera, a themed evening with lectures on literature, accompanied by music. In the Catholic Academy Die Wolfsburg, there is also a film seminar twice a year, in which feature films on a current topic are shown and then discussed in groups. Once a year there is a school festival in the Nikolaus Groß Abendgymnasium.

Admission requirements

On the basis of the legal provisions of the second educational path in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia, the completion of the 18th year as well as proof of completed vocational training or at least two years of professional activity are prerequisites for admission to the evening grammar school. Proven unemployment, bringing up a child or caring for a needy family member can be taken into account. The placement in the semester system takes place according to legal requirements and after an individual consultation. Participation in the course phase (from semester 3) is mandatory for all students. A key decision criterion for the classification is proof of a second foreign language, which can be made up at the evening grammar school if it was not achieved in the first educational path.
